Egyptian security officials on Wednesday night thwarted what could have been a major terror attack against Israeli, Egyptian reports said.

Egyptian soldiers shot and killed a terrorist who was running to the Kerem Shalom border crossing, apparently planning to blow himself up at the crossing, where IDF soldiers check goods going into Gaza.

The terrorist was wearing a suicide belt, and carrying explosive devices and weapons as well, the officials told Palestinian Authority news service Ma’an.

In addition, the Egyptian officials said, Egyptian soldiers destroyed a vehicle loaded with Grad rockets that were set to be fired at Israel. The vehicle was destroyed at the northern Sinai town of Sheikh Zuweid near the border with the Gaza Strip. Two terrorists were killed, the officials said.

Besides killing terrorists near the Israeli border, Egyptian soldiers also killed several terrorists deeper in Sinai, officials said. Three terrorists were killed, two were injured, and 16 were arrested in a military operation in central Sinai, the army said.

The Egyptian military has been carrying out a crackdown on terrorists in the lawless Sinai Peninsula, where an Islamist insurgency spiked following the ouster of Islamist president Mohammed Morsi last year.
