Israel’s Rafael Defense Systems will unveil the world’s smallest military missile at the annual Eurosatory “Land and Airland Defense and Security” exhibition in Paris next week, Israel Defense reports.

The Mini-Spike electro-optic guided missile is the first missile to implement an anti-personnel precision attack missile. It has range of approximately three quarters of a mile (1.5 km) and is intended for deployment against enemy forces in shelters or trenches.

The entire missile weighs only 8.8 pounds (4 kilograms) and uses wireless communications to view and guide the missile to its target. Continue Reading »

US to announce massive Iron Dome package

Defense Minister Ehud Barak and US counterpart to announce plans for $680 million in aid to fund 3-4 additional batteries.

 

The Obama administration is planning to announce this week a $680 million aid package to Israel for the procurement of additional Iron Dome batteries.

The announcement will be made following a meeting between Defense Minister Ehud Barak and Defense Secretary Leon Panetta at the Pentagon on Thursday. The two will hold a joint press conference following the meeting.

Israel currently has four operational Iron Dome batteries and the Air Force plans to deploy an additional 3 over the coming year.

GOP Backing $680M for Iron Dome

Republicans are pushing for a large military aid allotment for Israel’s Iron Dome system due to Obama’s refusal to name a figure.

 

US lawmakers are considering an aid allotment of $680 million to strengthen Israel’s Iron Dome short-range rocket shield.

The move by Republican lawmakers comes in the face of previous attempts by the Obama administration to prune defense aid to Israel.

Senior Republicans Howard McKeon (R-CA) and Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL) criticized Obama for his lack of support of a “vital defense cooperation program.”

The Obama administration earlier announced that an “appropriate” level of funding will be provided for this program, but did not request any specific sum for 2012. Continue Reading »

Pentagon wants more money for Israel’s Iron Dome

US Defense Department to ask Congress for additional funding for Israel’s short-range rocket defense system

WASHINGTON – The US Defense Department will ask Congress for additional funding for Israel’s Iron Dome defense system, Ynet learned Tuesday.

Pentagon press secretary George Little said in a statement that short-range rocket defense system has been critical in recent weeks, when nearly 300 rockets were fired at southern Israel from Gaza.

The Iron Dome system intercepted more than 80% of its targets.

Little said the Pentagon and Israel have discussed US support for buying additional Iron Dome systems and will ask Congress for money.
