Turkish synagogue built in 1492 hosts first Jewish wedding in over 40 years

Built in 1492, the world’s 3rd-largest synagogue had tightened security for its 3,000 guests attending its first Jewish wedding, in 41 years.

A historic synagogue in northwest Turkey was host to a Jewish wedding, its first in 41 years, on Sunday, the Hurriyet Daily News reported.

The recently renovated synagogue in Edirne was built in 1492 for Jews seeking refuge in the Ottoman Empire and is the third-largest in the world.

The event prompted tight security, with surrounding roads being closed and searches of guests. The synagogue also has a metal detector installed at the entrance. Continue Reading »

Israeli humanitarian aid organization IsraAID this month hosted Oscar-winning actress Susan Sarandon at a compound housing thousands of families that have fled the Middle East to find safety in Europe.

A woman was killed in a fatal road accident near Beersheva yesterday (Sunday), after crashing into a caravan of camels which were roaming the roads unattended.

IDF cancel parents’ prerogative to retrieve single son soldiers from battlefield

 

New IDF regulations prevent parents from retrieving single son soldiers from battle, and now direct donations to soldiers from civilian organizations or individuals, which was once common, in now forbidden under the new IDF regulations.

A new decree issued by the IDF stipulates that parents with one son who consent to him serving in a combat capacity will not be able to annul the agreement. Prior to this decision, parents who had a change of heart could force the army to send out a retrieval unit to extract their son from the battlefield.

The policy change was influenced by incidents which took place during Operation Protective Edge 2014, in which nine parents had decided to retract their previous consent to have their son serve as a fighter. Continue Reading »

34 years later, Russia returns captured IDF tank to Israel

 

With no sign of the three Israeli soldiers who manned the tank during the First Lebanon War at the Battle of Sultan Yacoub, Russia agrees to return the tank to Israel to be used as a memorial.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed his appreciation on Sunday for Russian President Vladimir Putin’s signing of a presidential decree ordering the return of an IDF tank that was captured in 1982 during the First Lebanon War.

The captured Israeli tank currently on display at the Moscow Military Museum will return to Israel as the only reminder/memorial of the missing three IDF soldiers (inserted on photo) from the Battle of Sultan Yacoub.

Sara Netanyahu may face criminal charges in PM residence investigation

 

In the ongoing drama about the PM’s residence, Jerusalem district prosecutor’s office may also indict the PM’s wife on criminal charges, based on the findings of the police investigation.

 

Police have found evidence of criminal wrongdoing on the part of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s wife Sara Netanyahu, regarding the use of state funds in the management of the Prime Minister’s residence.

The revelation on Sunday means that prosecutors could potentially indict Netanyahu on criminal charges based on the findings of the police investigation.

Abbas requesting NATO replace IDF as Israel retreats to 1967 border

Refusing to recognize Israel as a Jewish state, Abbas said the French initiative must be based on Israel’s 1967 border, and without an IDF presence.

 

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas in Cairo on Saturday called for NATO forces to replace the IDF in the West Bank, as part of as part of any peace deal that leads to the creation of a two-state solution.

The United Arab Emirates, Egypt and Jordan are planning for a post-Mahmoud Abbas era in the Palestinian Authority, which would leave Abbas’s arch-rival Mohammed Dahlan in control of the PA, the Middle East Eye website exposed on Friday.
