Israel Signs UN’s Arms Trade Treaty for 2-Year Trial Period
Israel signed the UN’s Arms Trade Treaty (ATT), agreeing not to sell weapons to criminal groups or recognized terrorists.

Israel in recent days signed the UN’s Arms Trade Treaty (ATT), in which the country commits not to sell weapons to terrorists and criminal groups. Israel has taken on provisional membership in the treaty, and will review the matter after a 24 month test membership period. The treaty became effective on December 24, and has been signed by 130 states.

Among the countries that have so far refused to sign the resolution are Iran, Syria, North Korea, and Venezuela.

Preparatory work began at a Golan Heights exploratory oil drilling site on Tuesday morning – advancing a project that was temporarily delayed by environmental opposition.

The project, which is being conducted by Afek Oil and Gas, involves three years of exploration for conventional oil using up to 10 wells. While the company has held a license for the project for the past 20 months, petitions against the activities put the plans on hold since September. Continue Reading »
PA’s Resolution for Statehood Defeated at UN Security Council
PA’s unilateral resolution calling on Israel to “end the occupation” failed to get the needed 9 votes. Most countries abstained, including the UK.

The United Nations (UN) Security Council failed on Tuesday night to adopt a resolution on Palestinian statehood, AFP reports.

Only eight countries voted in favor of the resolution, two voted against, and there were five abstentions. The resolution needed nine votes in its favor to have passed.
France, China and Russia were among the countries that supported the text setting a 12-month deadline for negotiations on a final peace deal with Israel, reported AFP. Continue Reading »
UK Voices Opposition to Palestinian Statehood Resolution
Britain joins the US with concerns how the revised UN draft does not address Israel’s security needs.

Britain joined the United States and Israel on Tuesday, lashing out against a toughly worded Palestinian statehood resolution submitted to the UN Security Council, Reuters reported.

When asked whether Britain would support the revised draft, British UN Ambassador Mark Lyall Grant said the country would not.

According to an article published last week by Foreign Policy, over the past year the Obama Administration State Department cited Israel for “unacceptable behavior” more times than Pakistan, Russia, Egypt, China, Afghanistan and Iraq. The article examined how many times a country’s actions were condemned as “unacceptable,” and Israel came in fourth, right after Syria, Iran and North Korea.

Palestinian Throwing Rocks on Passing Israeli Cars Shot Dead by IDF
IDF Spokesperson’s Unit says procedure requires investigation after soldiers shoot Palestinian on Monday, throwing stones at traveling cars in West Bank.

A Palestinian was killed on Monday by IDF fire near the settlement of Kfar Tapuach in the West Bank. The IDF Spokesperson’s Unit said that IDF forces observed Palestinians hurling rocks at the road and proceeded to apprehend the suspects, during which one of the stone throwers was shot.

He received an emergency treatment by the IDF, but later succumbed to his wounds. IDF officials said that an official Military Police investigation has been launched.

Lower Egyptian court forbids Jews from celebrating at Jewish mystic’s grave
The Egyptian court said its ruling was based on “moral offenses” committed during previous years at the 3-day Jewish festival celebrating Rabbi Jacob Abu Hasira’s birth.

CAIRO – An Egyptian court permanently banned a Jewish celebration that has taken place since the 1979 peace deal with Israel and asked the government to remove the tomb where it takes place from a list of official shrines, judicial sources said on Monday.

PA Foreign Minister Reports UN Resolution to be Put Off Until 2015
Palestinian Authority FM reveals Arab League ambassadors mulling unilateral resolution demanding Israel’s withdrawal & UN recognition is likely to be postponed yet again.

The council of Arab UN ambassadors gathered on Monday to discuss the Palestinian Authority (PA) resolution set to be proposed at the UN Security Council, unilaterally demanding recognition and Israeli withdrawals – however, the vote on the resolution set for Monday looks to be postponed yet again.
Last Friday PA chief negotiator Saeb Erekat announced that the vote would be held that day, or at the latest this Monday. But according to PA foreign minister Riyad Al-Maliki, the vote doesn’t seem likely until the new year begins.
