Americans for Peace and Tolerance (APT) today released a 30 minute video showing how Northeastern Professor Denis Sullivan and other Northeastern faculty abuse academic freedom to promote anti-Israel lies and anti-Semitism as defined by the U.S. State Department.

Sullivan is a tenured professor and director of the Northeastern Middle East Center for Peace, Culture and Development.  The video examines Professor Sullivan’s lectures, invited guests, reading lists and student trips to the Middle East, all of which seem designed to provide students with a one-sided view of the Arab-Israeli conflict.

“It seems clear that Professor Sullivan has  built his department to inculcate students with a hostile and demonized view of the Jewish state, with repeated comparisons to the Nazis, Dr. Charles Jacobs, APT president said. “Indeed, viewers will see that some of the core themes promoted in his courses are plainly anti-Semitic, and are outright lies.”

Sullivan allegedly also introduced the students and the university to virulent anti-Semitic Arab officials and religious leaders.

Jewish students and a Hillel staff member interviewed on the video expressed deep concern and frustration at Sullivan’s constant defaming Israel.

“The U.S. State Department has clearly defined the “new anti-Semitism” and the video shows that what Sullivan teaches to Northeastern students clearly fits the US government definition,” Jacobs said.

In addition to video clips featuring faculty from the Middle East Center, the video included a clip from April of this year, which showed Northeastern Economics Professor Shahid Alam telling Northeastern students that they should be proud of being called anti-Semites. Alam bragged in the clip that over the past 10 years of his teaching there, the student body had largely turned against Israel, while pro-Israel students have been intimidated into silence.

This is the third video in a series exposing examples of radicalism and anti-Jewish activities at Northeastern University.

“Recently, Northeastern University administration had taken some positive steps in dealing with issues identified in our first two videos.” Jacobs said. “The problem of anti-Israelism and anti-Semitism is not restricted to this campus but is a national problem that first came to wide public attention in 2004 with the controversial film “Columbia Unbecoming,” which documented the intimidation of Jewish students at Columbia University.

“The Jewish community in Boston needs to get involved,” Jacobs said. “The silence of Boston’s Anti-Defamation League (ADL) is especially disappointing. Anti-Semitism on campus should be more of a concern for them,” he added.

Americans for Peace and Tolerance called on Northeastern University President Joseph Aoun asking him to place Sullivan’s Middle East Center under his custodial responsibility until the Center complies with Northeastern academic standards and core values.

“Professors Sullivan and Alam cannot be allowed to indoctrinate students and promote lies,” Jacobs said.
