Free Power for Israel Electric Company Workers Blows a Fuse

Yiftach Ron-Tal, the IEC Chairman told a Knesset committee Wednesday the company is prepared to end its free electricity perk to their workers

IEC Chairman Yiftach Ron-Tal told Knesset members on Wednesday the company is willing to end a decades-old perk to workers: free electricity.

In discussions with the Knesset Finance Committee, Ron-Tal promised that “as part of reform, we will get rid of the phenomenon of free electricity.”

The company’s workers are among the highest-paid in the country, and its union, which includes some 9,000 members, is one of the strongest. The company also employs 4,000 temporary workers, but fires them within five years – before they have remained long enough to earn tenure. Continue Reading »

PA Electric Company: Theft is leading Us to Bankruptcy

The Palestinian Authority Electric Company intimidated by  “refugee camp” residents.

 

 

The Palestinian Authority Electric Company has complained that theft is driving it bankrupt. The company owes the Israel Electric Company 423 million shekels, largely due to 550 million shekels of unpaid bills from its customers.

Electric Company officials called a press conference urging PA leaders to stop the theft, and require those living in “refugee camp” neighborhoods to pay their bills. Workers are afraid to go into the notoriously violent “camp” neighborhoods to collect, they said.

Egypt-Gaza Power Struggle Leaves PA Arabs in the Dark

Gaza’s Hamas rulers are caught between their rage at Israel and their distaste for having to cooperate with Egypt.

The result has been a wintry region without electricity and, within the next few days, the situation will reach crisis proportions if the leadership does not come up with a solution.

Storage tanks in which fuel was kept as a back-up have been drained nearly dry; basic infrastructure is now threatened, local sources say.

However, Hamas did not expect Egypt to balk at the intransigence so long tolerated by a Jewish State that had formerly supplied Gaza with electricity even during the 2006 war, and subsequently during Operation Cast Lead. Continue Reading »
