Survey: 40% of British Jews considering emigration over rampant anti-Semitism

A poll conducted by the U.K.’s Campaign against Anti-Semitism finds 90% of the British Jewish community believe Labour Party is inherently anti-Semitic.
• European Jewish ‎Association ‎appeals to EU political parties to classify ‎BDS movements as anti-Semitic‎.

A new survey has found that British Jews are growing ‎increasingly concerned over anti-Semitism in the ‎country. ‎

According to data presented by Gideon Falter, ‎chairman of the Campaign against Anti-Semitism NGO, ‎‎90% of British Jews believe the Labour Party is ‎anti-Semitic and 40% are considering leaving the U.K. ‎over the rise in anti-Semitism.‎

Tunisia’s PM Appoints Jewish Minister of Tourism

Appointed by the Tunisian Prime Minister, the new tourism minister Roni Trabelsi, will be the second Jewish minister to have ever served in the predominantly Muslim country, after Nessim Samama, who served as the finance minister to the King of Tunis in 1860.

Tunisian Prime Minister Youssef Chahed announced 13 new appointments in his Cabinet on Monday, including several ministers. The new tourism minister is Roni Trabelsi, a Jewish man who reportedly lives in France but also holds Tunisian citizenship.

Trabelsi is a prominent and successful businessman in Tunisia, dealing mostly with tourism. He owns the Royal First Travel agency. Continue Reading »

Poll: A third of British Jews ponders leaving the UK

In their Multiyear survey, the Campaign Against anti-Semitism found 31% of British Jews consider leaving the UK over fear of anti-Semitism.

  • 17% of Jewish UK citizens say they feel unwelcome in Britain.
  • 37% polled feel they need to hide their Jewishness in public.
  • 65% of British Jews say gov’t doesn’t do enough to keep them safe.
  • 80% say the Labour Party is too tolerant of anti-Semitism.

Belgian Animal Welfare Minister Calls For Complete Ban on Ritual Slaughter

 

Belgian cabinet minister Ben Weyts, once again calls for ban on Shechita in the country.

Belgian cabinet minister and animal welfare minister Ben Weyts on Tuesday called for a complete ban on the ritual slaughter of animals.

The decision will have a huge impact on the Muslim and Orthodox Jewish communities, for whom shechita (ritual slaughter) is an integral component of religious life.

Weyts, who is a member of the ruling center-right party New Flemish Alliance, cited resistance by Muslims to a compromise on ritual slaughter of animals: “Organizations within the Muslim community are just not open to any sort of compromise,” he said. Continue Reading »

Spanish Town Officially Changes Name After 400 Years From ‘Camp Kill Jews’ to ‘Jews’ Hill’

 

Hundreds of years after the Spanish Inquisition, a Spanish town formerly known as Castillo Matajudíos, which translates to Camp Kill Jews, was renamed to Castillo Mota de Judíos, or Jews’ Hill Camp.

Israeli Ambassador to Spain Daniel Kutner took part on Friday in a name-changing ceremony for an ancient Spanish town that did away with an old anti-Semitic name.

The town, formerly Castrillo Matajudíos, which translates to Camp Kill Jews, was renamed as Castrillo Mota de Judíos, or Jews’ Hill Camp.

Historical records indicate that Jews’ Hill Camp was actually the town’s original name, which was changed to Camp Kill Jews in 1627, 135 years after Jews were ordered to convert to Catholicism or flee the country in the 1492 Spanish Inquisition. Continue Reading »

Israeli bioengineers developing 1st lab-grown chicken

2 years after Dutch lab engineered historic lab-grown hamburger patty, Israeli researchers now developing the first ever lab-grown chicken.

Israeli researchers are in the process of developing the first ever lab-grown chicken, just a few short years after the first lab-grown hamburger was debuted.

The research is being funded by the Modern Agricultural Foundation, a non-profit “working to promote research in the field of cultured meat.”

The foundation’s co-founder, Shir Friedman says she hopes that by the end of 2015, there will be a recipe for how to “culture chicken cells.”

Five centuries after it burned thousands of Jews at the stake, forced thousands of others to convert to Christianity and expelled the rest, Portugal is granting citizenship rights to their descendants as part of an attempt to make amends.

The Portuguese cabinet on Thursday approved a law offering dual citizenship to the descendants of those Sephardi Jews, the term commonly used for those who once lived in the Iberian peninsula.

France Honors Muslim Who Saved Jews in Terrorist Attack With French Nationality

An official ceremony will be held on Jan 20, giving Lassana Bathily his French passport for his bravery during the hostage taking in the Hyper Casher market.

A Malian Muslim who hid shoppers from an Islamist gunman during an attack on a Jewish supermarket in Paris will be given French nationality, the Interior Ministry said on Thursday.

After the gunman had already killed people during a hostage taking in the store on Friday, 24-year old shop attendant Lassana Bathily hid several people.

A quarter of Jews in Britain have considered leaving the country in the last two years and well over half feel they have no long term future in Europe, according to a survey published on Wednesday.

Additionally, anti-Semitic beliefs are widely prevalent among the wider public with 45 percent of Britons agreeing with at least one anti-Semitic sentiment, the YouGov poll for the Campaign Against Antisemitism group found.

Bennett: Paris victims’ families won’t be burdened with costs of plots & funeral

 

After Jewish burial association planned to charge Paris Jewry 40,000 shekels per burial plot and 10,000 per funeral for each victim of the kosher market terror attack, Minister Naftali Bennett decided Israel would cover the costs.

Minister of Religious Services Naftali Bennett announced Tuesday night that the Jewish community of Paris will not have to pay for the burial plots and funerals of the Hyper Cacher victims.

French Jewish Community Living in Fear

The last time I saw a Jewish minyan relocate from a synagogue to a private residence for security reasons was in 2010. I was in Rayda, Yemen, where the Jews were still reeling from the assassination of Moshe Nahari, the brother of a prominent rabbi.

I never thought I would find myself at the same exact same setting in Paris, only four years later.
