Portman’s debut role was in 1994, in the Luc Besson film “Léon: The Professional.” She won critical acclaim for her role as a child assassin, and continued to have an illustrious and varied career. Some of her more famous roles include Queen Amidala in the “Star Wars” prequel trilogy, Sam in “Garden State” and Alice in “Closer.” Portman won the 2011 Academy Award for Best Leading Actress, for her portrayal of a psychotic ballerina in the dramatic suspense movie “Black Swan.”

Portman had famously missed the premiere of “Star Wars: The Phantom Menace” because she had to study for her SATs. The move paid off, as Portman was admitted to Harvard University, and was asked to speak at Columbia. During her undergraduate degree, Portman took several graduate courses at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem.
