Applied CleanTech company develops system capable of producing paper from wastewater residue

For decades we have been using notebooks said to be produced from “woodless paper”. A new Israeli invention is making it possible to produce “scentless paper” – from drain water.

Dr. Refael Aharon of Applied CleanTech has developed a system capable of turning stinking sewage into a renewable and profitable source of energy. How?

About 99.9% of the drainage which comes out of our homes and flows through pipes is water. The remaining 10% are comprised of solid substances which can be used for the production of cellulose, which is used to produce paper. Continue Reading »

Israel helps transform China’s dairy industry

As demand for dairy products in China increases rapidly, Chinese dairies turn to Israel for farm management technology and training.

Cow milk is a fairly recent addition to the Chinese diet. But demand for milk products has grown so quickly that existing farms can barely meet it. So Chinese dairy companies are turning to the acknowledged authority on the milking business: Israel.

Eight Chinese dairy farm manager trainees recently completed an 11-week course in Israel organized by AfiMilk, a world leader in computerized systems for dairy farm and herd management.

The six men and two women were sent by their employer to get acquainted with AfiMilk’s software, visit productive Israeli farms and milking parlors, and learn about advanced animal welfare and operating procedures.

Israel to sell $300M in water-tech to China

Jerusalem, Beijing ink multi-million dollar deal which will see Israel provide innovative water technology to china’s agriculture sector

Israel has recently signed a deal to sell China water technology valued at $300 million for use in the agriculture sector, the Israeli Finance Ministry said in a statement.

The deal was signed by both countries’ finance ministers in Beijing during a visit to China by Israeli Finance Minister Yuval Steinitz.

Israel passes US, Europe in bottle recycling

In total, Israel collected about 77% of all beverage containers in 2011, exceeding the government’s target of 73%.

Israelis recycled 50 percent of the country’s plastic bottles in 2011, overtaking Europe and the United States, with figures of 48% and 29%, respectively, the ELA recycling company reported.

While the country only recycled about 16,000 tons of plastic PET bottles in 2010, the 2011 figures reached about 20,000 tons, according to ELA.

In total, Israel collected about 77% of all beverage containers – plastic and glass – requiring deposit in 2011, exceeding the government’s target of 73% and amounting to about 600 million beverage containers, ELA said.

Potable water system wins Intel competition

Netanya high school pupils developed a system  to disinfect & clean water supplies.

 

A pair of Netanya high school pupils who developed a system using solar rays to disinfect and clean water supplies so they are suitable for drinking won the Intel-Israel 15th Annual Young Scientists Competition on Tuesday.

Avishai Katko and Maya Braun of Sharett High School found a way to expose polluted water to ultraviolet light using renewable energy at low cost. The device, if produced commercially, could be used in any home, the pupils said.

Israel has developed and tested its own bunker buster bomb, that has been described as “a very credible military option,” to use against Iran.

The 500-pound “MP-500” bomb is laser-guided, and the video below shows it penetrating four reinforced concrete walls. Iran has buried several of its nuclear facilities, including a uranium enrichment plant, under concrete bunkers in mountainous areas.

The government-owned Israel Military Industries (IMI) developed the bomb, an upgrade of the U.S. Mk82 bunker buster.

“The lethality, precision … and relatively low weight enables its use against multiple targets in a single pass; an element that increases the operational effectiveness of attack,” according to IMI. Continue Reading »

Israel has struck oil again, this time off the Tel Aviv coast. Owners say the find includes 100 million barrels of oil, worth $10 billion.

Modiin Energy and Adira Energy discovered an estimated 128 million barrels of oil and 1.8 trillion cubic feet of gas in shallow water less than 15 miles northwest of Tel Aviv.

Israel begins prep work on underwater power cable with Cyprus

 Feasibility study on longest electricity cable planned to run between two nations underway; project aims to bilateral energy security

Israel and Cyprus launched a joint feasibility study on Sunday, focused on the construction of an underwater power cable between the two countries.

According to the Cyprus Mail, the project aims to boost the two nation’s energy security, as well as offer Israel a way to export energy to Europe.

Circumcision tied to lower prostate cancer risk, U.S. study shows

Study jibes with scientific reports that wives and girlfriends of circumcised men have lower rates of infection with viruses which in rare cases may lead to cervical and other cancers.Circumcised men may have a slightly lower risk of developing prostate cancer than those who still have their foreskin, according to a U.S. study.

The World Health Organization already recommends the controversial procedure based on research showing it lowers heterosexual men’s risk of contracting HIV, the virus that causes AIDS.

Israel, US med schools sign deal

Over coming months, Bar-Ilan University’s Faculty of Medicine in Galilee and University of Miami’s Miller School of Medicine to explore joint development of cancer center which will integrate scientific research conducted by basic, translational and clinical faculty

 

Bar-Ilan University’s Faculty of Medicine in the Galilee and the University of Miami’s Miller School of Medicine have signed a landmark agreement which will further promote collaboration between the two institutions.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), signed recently at the Israel Business Conference in Tel Aviv, will allow the two medical schools to continue their collaboration on a wide variety of projects.

Something New Under the Sun: Israeli Hybrid Solar Tech. in Spain

AORA, the innovative solar energy developer using Israeli research, dedicated its Second Hybrid Micro CSP Power Station in Spain.

AORA Solar (www.aora-solar.com), a renewable energy pioneer and leading developer of applied ultra-high temperature concentrating solar power (CSP) technology, has completed construction on its second gas turbine solar thermal power station. The station was constructed over a period of seven months, and is designed for a minimum economic lifespan of 25 years..

Built in Almeria, Spain, the plant is now undergoing commissioning and certification and is scheduled to begin regular power generation. Germ-slaying ozone creates pure water

Harmless ozone beats chlorine every time for disinfecting water. Now an Israeli company offers a new technology that makes it affordable, too.

From swimming pools to commercial kitchens, Greeneng is offering technology that can decontaminate water with ozone cheaply and safely.

“Clean” isn’t always as clean as you think. While the chemicals in cleaning solutions and water purification systems do away with germs, they dirty the environment and aren’t healthy for humans.

An Israeli company is offering an alternative: an ozone-based cleaning system to purify tap water. The system, says Ittai Weissberg, CEO of Greeneng Solutions, is better at getting rid of germs, and is a lot safer than chlorine- and ammonia-based cleaning solutions.

He’s only 18, but Ben Lang is already a serial entrepreneur. Now he’s co-founded Innovation Israel — a community for startups, entrepreneurs and investors.

“Right now I want to learn from really smart people,” says Ben Lang.

 

Ben Lang gets a kick out of sharing the story of how he received a cease-and-desist order from the New York Times for making a website called freenewyorktimes.com, which explained how to get around the venerable newspaper’s impending pay wall.

“They shut down my server for a week, and I couldn’t even login to take down the website,” he recalls. “If they would have asked nicely I would have stopped.”

California wine country to benefit from Haifa study

Water-monitoring system developed by IBM’s Israeli labs allows close observation of pressure valves, reduces leakage.

 

  Water conservation tools developed in Haifa research labs will soon be arriving at Northern California’s wine country, in order to reduce water loss for the more than 600,000 people who live in the Valley of the Moon Water District.
  Building upon a cooperation agreement signed in June 2010 between IBM and the Sonoma County Water Agency, the technological giant has installed analytic devices and sensors that reduce water loss by making pressure adjustments based on usage, weather and environmental conditions, the company announced on Wednesday morning.

IDF Camouflage Creates ‘Disappearing Soldiers’

The IDF has re-defined the term “disappearing soldiers,” who are being trained to blend in with the environment to avoid enemy detection.

The term “disappearing soldiers” usually spreads fear among Israelis, worried about kidnappings, but the Second Lebanon War taught army commanders to re-define the term for a positive use by camouflaging soldiers.

The concept of camouflaged clothing is not new, but soldiers at the military anti-terror school now are being taught how to use nature to help protect themselves.
