The Israeli army destroyed a Hamas observation post in the Gaza Strip on Sunday in response to a rocket that was fired at Israel but exploded before making it across the border.

A “projectile” was fired from the Gaza Strip toward an open area in the Eshkol region of southern Israel on Sunday, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said. Initially they said the rocket landed in Israel but later corrected the report to say it exploded within the Strip.

“In response to the attempted shooting, the IDF destroyed an observation post of the Hamas terrorist organization in the southern Gaza Strip,” an army statement said.

“The shooting attempt constitutes a threat to the security of Israeli citizens and harms the sovereignty of the State of Israel,” it continued. “The Hamas terrorist organization is responsible for any terrorist attack carried out from the Gaza Strip.”

Earlier, sirens had sounded along Israeli communities bordering the Hamas-run enclave.

Rocket fire from Gaza has been relatively scarce since a devastating war in 2014 which killed over 2000 people.
