The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, wants to make the act of supporting all factions of Hezbollah illegal in Britain, following outrage over the Lebanese militant group’s flags being flown in the city’s Al Quds Day March in June, the Jewish Chronicle reported on Thursday.Khan will write to Britain’s Home Secretary, Amber Rudd, to urge a change in the law, the paper reported.

“I share the concerns of the Jewish community about support shown for Hezbollah, which is an illegal, proscribed and anti-Semitic organization,” Khan, who hails from the left-wing Labour party, was quoted as saying.

“Anti-Semitism or hate crime of any kind has no place in our city, where we don’t just tolerate diversity, we respect and celebrate it.”

“I remain in contact with the Met Commissioner about this issue, and will be writing to the Home Secretary to make strong representations on behalf of London’s Jewish communities about their legitimate and understandable concerns.”

In 2016 Khan became the first Muslim to be elected mayor of London, one of the world’s premier cultural and financial hubs.

Hezbollah’s military wing, which is active in Syria and believed by Israeli intelligence to have amassed an enormous stockpile of weapons for use against Israel in a future war, is already a proscribed terror organization in Britain.

Its political wing, a major force in Lebanese politics, is not.

Many British Jews were scandalized after organizers of the Al Quds Day march in the capital on June 17 permitted participants to fly flags of Hezbollah’s political wing. Al Quds is the Arabic name for Jerusalem.Several demonstrators waved banners that read: “We are all Hezbollah. Boycott Israel.”

The leadership of the Shi’ite group, which receives funding and weapons from Iran, frequently calls for the destruction of Israel.
