The chip was manufactured by scientists from the Technion’s Russell Berrie Nanotechnology Institute. It has a surface area of just 0.04 square millimeters (0.00006 square inches) and a width of 0.00002 mm (or 20 nanometers). It was embedded in an ancient piece of Jerusalem stone that had been used as a seal during the Second Temple period.

The documents were written into the chip using a focused beam of high-energy gallium ions. Various points on the surface of the chip were bombarded by these accelerated ions, creating microscopic inscriptions.
