Intelligence units say 21st Century warfare demands redefining the term: ‘combat soldier’

The IDF General Staff has been grappling with a new dilemma recently: In the modern battlefield – who is a “combat soldier”?

While classic warfare doctrines say that combat soldiers are those who literally face the enemy on the ground, modern warfare is fought in growing virtual arenas, in which cyber-combatants play key roles.

Various IDF corps now face a new reality, and according to a Friday report in Yedioth Ahronoth, they are at odds over the placement of future recruits, especially those presenting exceptional computer skills. Continue Reading »

Israel beefs up cyber defenses

This war is being fought from the keyboard, and when Israel presses ‘Enter’ it’s no less effective than a soldier opening fire on the battlefield.

Israel’s Shabak internal security agency, also known as Shin Bet, has opened a new cyber defense division to help in the escalating cyber war with Iran and other enemies of the state.

In an interview with Yediot Ahronot, an officer in this new division said that in addition to the thousands of low-level cyber attacks Israel fends off every day from individual hackers, there are also a regular number of attacks by foreign government agencies. Continue Reading »

Netanyahu says that Israel subject to increasing number of cyber attacks

PM Benjamin Netanyahu reports in weekly cabinet meeting that there are ‘daily attempts’ to infiltrate the country’s computer systems.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu admitted this morning that Israel is recently the target of increasing cyber attacks. Speaking at the beginning of the weekly cabinet meeting, Netanyahu said that “there is an escalation in the attempts to carry out a cyber attack on Israel’s’ computer infrastructures. There are daily attempts to break into Israeli systems.”

US, Israel to boost cyber warfare cooperation

The US and Israel have agreed to boost their cooperation in the field of cyber warfare, the Yedioth Ahronoth daily reported Thursday.

Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon and Counter-Terrorism Bureau Director Eitan Ben David met on Tuesday with Ambassador-at-Large Dan Benjamin, who heads the State Department’s Bureau of Counterterrorism.
