Israel begins prep work on underwater power cable with Cyprus

 Feasibility study on longest electricity cable planned to run between two nations underway; project aims to bilateral energy security

Israel and Cyprus launched a joint feasibility study on Sunday, focused on the construction of an underwater power cable between the two countries.

According to the Cyprus Mail, the project aims to boost the two nation’s energy security, as well as offer Israel a way to export energy to Europe.

The project is estimated at $660 million, and would eventually become a part of a much longer cable, stretching into Greece and from there to the pan-European electricity grid, the report said. Continue Reading »

The station was constructed over a period of seven months, and is designed for a minimum economic lifespan of 25 years..

Built in Almeria, Spain, the plant is now undergoing commissioning and certification and is scheduled to begin regular power generation. For both Israel and Cyprus, connecting the countries through an underwater cable will foster more than just electrical stability for two energy islands – it will further the sense of “duty and friendship” between two allies, Athanasios Ktoridis, chairman of the board of DEH Quantum Energy, said in Jerusalem on Sunday.

“Through this project we shall develop a better understanding of our diverse and bountiful cultures,” Ktoridis said.DEH Quantum Energy is owned by Greece’s DEH Public Power Corporation, Quantum Energy of Cyprus and the Bank of Cyprus.
