Report: EU’s boycott of settlement trade legal

New expert legal opinion published in UK says EU nations can boycott products made by West Bank settlements without violating World Trade Organization obligations

A recent legal brief compiled by James Crawford, professor of international law at Britain’s Cambridge University, has ruled that European governments “Are fully within their rights to ban trade with Israeli settlements” in the West Bank.

According to a Monday report in the Independent, Crawford’s brief may fuel the cause of those within the UK and European Union seeking to harden their position on the imports of settlement products.

U.S. Presbyterian Church committee votes in favor of Israel divestment resolution

Committee Vote at assembly in Pennsylvania could be a sign that discourse among U.S. Christians on Israel is about to change, final vote to be held in the coming days.

 

 

Following a lengthy and heated debate, committee 15 of the 220th General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in the United States voted in favor of a motion calling for divestment from three companies that do business with Israel.

Norway Boycotts Israeli Construction Firm

Norway’s Ministry of Finance has decided to exclude Israeli construction firm Shikun & Binui Ltd.. from the Norwegian Government Pension Fund’s global investments.

The company, which is one of the largest in the Israeli construction industry, is being boycotted because it is “involved in the construction of settlements in violation of international law in East Jerusalem,” Aftenposten reported Thursday.

The news outlet mentions a construction project called “Ramat Rachel Dreams,” which will be completed in January 2013. Continue Reading »

Irish writer Gerard Donovan accuses pro-Palestinian group of ‘bullying’ him to boycott Israel

Israeli diplomats say Ireland one of the top three countries in Europe in terms of anti-Israel hostility; Irish Justice Minister accuses activists of ‘cyberbullying.’

Irish writer Gerard Donovan has attacked the pro-Palestinian boycott movement for trying to “bully” him to abstain from visiting Israel and take part in the International Writers Festival in Jerusalem this week. Donovan, a prominent novelist and poet, accused the Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign (IPSC) of “outright intimidation.”

Major British supermarket chain announces boycott of produce made in West Bank settlements

Co-op, fifth biggest supermarket chain in Britain, emphasizes it will continue doing business with companies that can guarantee none of their products come from outside the Green Line.

 

One of the largest supermarket chains in Britain has announced that it intends to boycott Israeli agricultural exporters that market also produce from the West Bank settlements.

While British food retailers have for some years now been labeling products that are grown or manufactured in settlements and in some cases boycotting them entirely, this is the first move by a major company to end all dealings with companies that export products from within the Green Line and from the settlements.
