Israeli doctors vow court fight over Knesset sanctioning force-feeding prisoners

After learning the Knesset passed law allowing force-feeding of hunger striking security prisoners, Israel’s Medical Association declared their doctors will challenge ruling in Supreme Court even though Interior Minister Erdan says law is necessary.

Israel’s parliament passed a contentious law on Thursday that would permit the force-feeding of inmates on hunger strike, eliciting harsh criticism over the practice.

Israel’s cabinet on Sunday approved draft legislation that would allow hunger striking prisoners to be force-fed if their lives are determined to be in jeopardy.

The bill was revived by Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan last week and initially passed its first reading in the previous Knesset last June, but never made it into law. Continue Reading »
