Swedish Jew and outspoken opponent to anti-Semitic violence Annika Hernroth-Rothstein has filed for asylum in her own country, Elder of Ziyon reports. The move is a public statement of dissent against the Scandinavian country’s anti-Semitic policies, which include a ban on ritual slaughter (shehita) and circumcision (brit milah), two major laws central to Jewish law and life.

Obama goes to Swedish synagogue on Rosh Hashanah (Jewish New Year)

U.S. President compares the heroism of Raoul Wallenberg, a Swedish diplomat who saved thousands of Jews during the Holocaust, and a need to save lives in Syria now.

 

U.S. President Barack Obama joined Jewish leaders and relatives of Raoul Wallenberg, who is credited with saving at least 20,000 Jews during the Holocaust at the Great Synagogue of Stockholm. A Swedish diplomat serving in Budapest, Hungary, Wallenberg risked his life to issue protective passports and shelter Jews in Swedish diplomatic buildings.

U.S. President will visit Great Synagogue of Stockholm on Rosh Hashanah

During U.S. President Barack Obama’s visit to Sweden, he’s scheduled to visit the Great Synagogue of Stockholm on the Jewish New Year.

President Barack Obama is slated to visit the Great Synagogue of Stockholm during his visit to Sweden.

Obama, who will arrive in the Swedish capital Wednesday on the eve of Rosh Hashanah, is en route to the G20 summit in St. Petersburg, Russia, Svenska Dagbladet reported Thursday.

The U.S. embassy in Stockholm confirmed that the president will visit the synagogue and a memorial monument for Raoul Wallenberg, the Swedish diplomat who saved thousands of Hungarian Jews during the Holocaust.

Sweden may reduce aid to Palestinians

 

Swedish Report: Sweden’s diplomat Gunilla Carlsson outlines reason for limiting financial support for Palestinians, why it might be lowered.

The Swedish government may cut back on financial assistance to the Palestinians following their failure to move forward with peace negotiations with Israel, Swedish news site The Local reported.

The report quoted Development aid minister Gunilla Carlsson as asking: “Is it worth continuing developing the prerequisites for a two-state solution if Israel and the Palestinians themselves do not want to sit down at the negotiating table?”

At the moment, Sweden donates $107 million on a yearly basis to Gaza and the West Bank to aid the Palestinians, a move that Carlsson says has been made to fortify the Palestinian’s position in any future peace talks.

Saskia Pantell, Vice Chair of the Zionist Federation of Sweden, praised to pro-Israel sentiment expressed at a rally this week. “We cannot allow politicians in Sweden to avoid the problem any longer,” Pantell stated. “We need to speak up and say what is really going on.”

Artist who Used Ashes of Holocaust Victims is under Police Investigation

Swedish police launch an investigation into an artist who claimed to paint using the ashes of Holocaust victims in his painting.

Swedish police on Friday said they had launched an investigation into an artist who says he used paint mixed from the ashes of Holocaust victims in a picture, AFP reported.

 

Carl Michael von Hausswolff claims he used ashes he took from a crematorium at the Majdanek concentration camp in 1989, mixing them with water to create the painting entitled “Memory Works”.

The black-and-white work, featuring vertical brushstrokes in a rectangle representing the suffering of the victims, is on display at the Martin Bryder Gallery in the southern Swedish town of Lund. Continue Reading »

Hundreds of Orthodox Jews wearing kippot, as well as non-Jewish supporters, marched in the southern Swedish city of Malmo on Friday, protesting against the recent rise in anti-Semitism and calling for religious tolerance for all minorities.

A number of anti-Semitic incidents have been reported by the Jewish community of Malmo, Sweden’s third largest city, in recent years, including verbal abuse directed against an Orthodox rabbi.
