PARIS – Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas said on Wednesday he could be forced to suspend security cooperation with Israel if the ramp-up of Israeli settlements continued.

“If the colonization continues, I would have no other choice, it would not be my fault,” Abbas told France’s Senate during a visit to Paris.

On Tuesday, he met President Francois Hollande, who voiced concern over a law retroactively legalizing about 4,000 settler homes built on privately owned Palestinian land in the West Bank.

The Settlements Law, which was passed by the Knesset this Monday, comes a mere few weeks after the Israeli government announced its intention to allow the construction of some 5,000 new housing units in the West Bank.

The international community was quick to criticize Israel after its parliament passed the controversial law, with the EU, the UN, Germany, France and the UK all issuing statements reproaching Israel for what they deemed as steps blocking the road to a possible two-state solution.

US President Donald Trump also called on Israel not to announce new settlements in the near future and is slated to discuss the issue in detail with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in their meeting on February 15.

Palestinian leaders were very vocal in their unanimous opposition, saying that the Knesset’s passage of legislation sanctions land theft and ends hopes for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.

“Israel’s ‘Legalizing theft’ law is another affirmation by the Israeli government for the Israeli settlers and occupation forces to continue their attacks against the land and people of Palestine,” Saeb Erekat, the secretary-general of the PLO Executive Committee, said in a press release.

Israel and Stuff Postscript:

How many times has Abbas made this threat….4…5…6?

Abbas has also threatened to resign over a dozen times,
and he’s also threatened to disband the Palestinian Authority – at least a half-dozen times.

Mahmoud Abbas is a coward, just like his predecessor, and would have met the same fate had security cooperation with Israel kept him safe….and he, and the PLO/Fatah leadership, very well knows it too.

I pray, he stands as a real man/leader, and finally keeps his word….but the world knows he won’t.
– Maintaining the 50yr status quo, is his ultimate goal.
