A 65-year-old woman has reportedly been evacuated to a nearby hospital for shock after a projectile fired from the Gaza Strip landed on her home in the southern Israeli town of Sderot. Amateur footage also shows several vehicles damaged in the incident.

The IDF on Friday destroyed a number of Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip less than an hour after a barrage of projectiles were fired at Israel from the coastal enclave, according to Hebrew media reports.

At least 10 rockets were fired into Israel’s south from the coastal enclave Friday evening, triggering rockets warnings along a number of border communities, the military said in a statement following an initial investigation.

According to Israeli Defense Forces, eight rockets from the barrage were intercepted by the Iron Dome aerial defense system with one of the projectiles landing directly on a home in Sderot.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and IDF Chief of Staff Avi Kochavi met to discuss the latest developments following the assault.

Or Bar Ilan, a resident of the Israeli border community of Kfar Aza, told i24NEWS that loud explosions were heard near her community but so far few details about the suspected assault have been revealed.

No one has claimed responsibility for the incident and motive for the assault remains unclear. The IDF ultimately holds the terror organization Hamas responsible for any hostilities launched at Israel originating from the Gaza Strip.

It was the second consecutive evening that the army reported rocket fire from the Palestinian enclave, which is run by the Islamist group Hamas.

Prior to Thursday, there had been no such reported rocket fire from Gaza towards Israel since September 12.

Earlier on Friday, an estimated 5,500 Palestinians protested along the Israel-Gaza border as part of the ongoing weekly “Great March of Return,” according to Hebrew media.

The Palestinian health ministry said that 96 demonstrators were injured, 57 of them by live bullets in the eastern part of the Gaza Strip.

Hebrew media reported that rioters hurled rocks, Molotov cocktails and explosive devices toward the security barrier which separates the Palestinian enclave from Israeli territory.
