SPECIAL SECURITY REPORT
Attack comes just hours after the IDF ordered civilian shelters in the country’s northern Golan Heights opened and called up reserve units after observing what it described as “irregular” activity by Iranian forces in Syria.
Syrian state television said an Israeli aerial strike was to blame for blasts at a military base south of the capital Damascus late Tuesday evening.
The report came just an hour after explosions were heard at the Al Kiswah base. It claimed that Syria’s air defense system shot down two Israeli missiles.
Locals also reported hearing the sounds of air defense missiles opening fire.
It also came just hours after the Israeli military ordered civilian shelters in the country’s northern Golan Heights region to be opened and called up military reserve units after observing what it described as “irregular” activity by Iranian forces in Syria.
Multiple Iranian officials have vowed to take revenge for an alleged Israeli strike on Syria last month that killed several Iranian military personnel, sparking weeks of military preparations in Israel.
Israel has reportedly been behind multiple strikes in Syria as it seeks to prevent Iran from establishing missile and drone bases close to Israel’s northern border.
Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman was also ensconced in talks with military chiefs in the Tel Aviv’s defense headquarters, his office said, just hours before the alleged strike occurred.
Israeli media reported that some units of the air defense, home front and military intelligence branches had been issued with call-up orders, just over an hour after the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) issued a warning to residents of the north.
A military spokesperson confirmed to i24NEWS that a “limited” call-up of reservists was being undertaken in response to “as required.”
“Following the identification of irregular activity of Iranian forces in Syria, the IDF has decided to change the civilian protection instructions in the Golan Heights and instructs local authorities to unlock and ready shelters in the area,” a statement from the army said.
“The Israeli public should remain attentive to IDF instructions that will be given if necessary.”
“Additionally, defense systems have been deployed and IDF troops are on high alert for an attack.
The IDF is prepared for various scenarios and warns that any aggression against Israel will be met with a severe response.”
This is a developing story.
