After the US President called the ties of the Jewish people to Jerusalem “ancient and eternal,” Hamas spokesperson Fawzi Barhoum referred to President Trump’s speech in Israel as “racist” and “counterfeit history” that was “installing the pillars of a new Israeli apartheid system, encouraging hatred of the Palestinian people.”

A spokesperson for the Gaza-based Islamist group Hamas on Tuesday, called a speech by US president Donald Trump in Israel earlier, “racist” and “counterfeit history” after saying Jerusalem had “ancient and eternal” Jewish ties.

Earlier on Tuesday, the US president said the “ties of the Jewish people to this Holy Land are ancient and eternal,” in a speech given at the Israel Museum in Jerusalem.

“His talk about the Jewish people’ historical and eternal connection to Jerusalem was falsification of history,” responded Hamas spokesperson Fawzi Barhoum.

He added that the speech was “racist privilege and installing the pillars of a new Israeli apartheid system, encouraging hatred of the Palestinian people.”

Barhoum also noted that, US policy is “fully aligned with Zionism” and will “encourage the occupation to commit more crimes and violations against our people and its holy places,”

The statement slamming the remarks came just hours after Trump departed Israel in what was a historic visit of both Jerusalem and the West Bank city of Bethlehem.

Trump spoke at a press conference alongside Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas Tuesday morning where he declared his commitment to peace between the Israelis and Palestinians.

“I have committed to try to reach a peace agreement between the Israelis and the Palestinians,” he said speaking only in general terms.

He spoke of the meeting with Abbas in Tuesday’s Israel Museum speech stating, “I had a meeting this morning with President Abbas and can tell you that the Palestinians are ready to reach for peace.”

Adding: “And by meeting with my very good friend, Benjamin, [I can say that] he is reaching for peace, he loves peace, he loves people, he especially loves the Israeli people. Benjamin Netanyahu wants peace.”
