A spokesman for the International Olympic Committee declared that refusing to compete against Israelis would represent “a serious breach of the IOC’s Code of Ethics, the principles of the Olympic Charter and the Athletes Oath”. Emanuelle Moreau warned athletes considering taking a stand, rather than racing against Israelis, to “stay at home”.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday, the London Assembly unanimously agreed to call on Mayor Boris Johnson to press for a minute’s silence at the summer games in London in memory of the murdered Israeli athletes at the 1972 Munich Games, despite an IOC decision not to do so.

The motion was proposed by former Labour MP Andrew Dismore.
