Tel Aviv Mayor Ron Huldai: Free Wi-Fi project is 2nd to none in size & scope as Tel Aviv-Jaffa Municipality sets up dozens of free Wi-Fi hot spots at commercial streets, shopping centers, parks & beaches.
Tel Aviv, the city that never sleeps, is now making sure its residents and visitors can stay connected to the Internet at all times. The Tel Aviv-Jaffa Municipality has established 60 free Wi-Fi hot spots around the city, covering a total of 3.6 square kilometers (1.4 square miles), including shopping centers, main commercial streets, parks and beaches.
The network was set up by Motorola Solutions Israel after winning the tender from the municipality. Free Wi-Fi spots include Dizengoff Street, Ben-Gurion Boulevard, the Herbert Samuel Promenade (the Tayelet), Jaffa Square and the Tel Aviv Museum, among others.
Another 20 hot spots will be added in the coming weeks, bringing the total to 80.
Tel Aviv-Jaffa Mayor Ron Huldai said the project was indicative of the municipality’s commitment to innovation.
“The municipal Wi-Fi project we are launching is second to none in terms of size and scope, and will allow city residents and visitors to enjoy free browsing throughout the entire city,” Huldai said.
Alon Solar, a member of the Tel Aviv-Jaffa city council, said that “free access to the Internet is a basic service that should be granted both to residents of the city and to domestic and international visitors.”
However, Nitzan Horowitz, Huldai’s opponent in the upcoming mayoral election in October, said, “Huldai is making improper use of public funds. Free Internet is a service that every public authority should give to residents. However, a complex and resource-consuming process like this, launched with campaign bravado, and in which huge sums of public funds were invested, is a cynical act that constitutes an unacceptable use of public funds.”
