New lab test to ID early lung cancer

 

Israel’s BioView is pairing its imaging technology with fluorescent DNA markers to help doctors find this deadly cancer before it’s too late.

 

A new non-invasive test to aid in early detection of lung cancer may soon be available, thanks to an agreement between Israel’s BioView and a leading California laboratory.

 

If a certain percentage of the cells show abnormal fluorescent patterns, that indicates lung cancer.

The test involves analyzing a patient’s sputum (phlegm) using BioView’s scanning-microscope imaging equipment and fluorescent DNA markers called FISH probes. BioView licensed these markers from MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. Continue Reading »

‘Fatah has secret bank account in Jordan’

Former Arafat advisor reveals that he has all necessary documents to prove existence of account with $39 million.

Yasser Arafat’s former financial advisor, Mohammed Rashid, revealed over the weekend that Fatah has a secret bank account in Jordan with $39 million.

Rashid said that the original sum was $44 million, but dropped after the Fatah leadership spent $5 million on the faction’s sixth annual conference.

 

Rashid, who was Arafat’s “moneyman” for many years, said he had all the necessary documents to prove the existence of the bank account.

He said that only PA President Mahmoud Abbas and two of his associates were authorized to deal with the secret account.

Technion suing Microsoft for NIS 25 million

The Technion Research and Development Foundation (TRDF) filed a NIS 25 million (roughly $6.5 million) damages claim against Microsoft and Microsoft Israel, Yedioth Ahronoth reported.

The organization claims that Microsoft is using online marketing software developed by a Technion professor and that it is doing so despite the TRDF’s refusal to release the rights for it and without paying anything in exchange.

NYPD Fires Orthodox Officer Over Beard

An orthodox police recruit has been fired from the NYPD academy for refusing to trim his beard to the regulation 1 millimeter length.

Rabbi Fishel Litzman, 38, was fired by the New York Police due to his refusal to shave his beard. Rabbi Litzman was soon to graduate the police academy.

According to the report, Litzman was an outstanding student at the police academy and at the time of his recruitment, but then announced he would not adhere to rules to trim his beard because of his faith.

“I always wanted to be a policeman,” Litzman told the Daily News of New York.

Prosor, 53, who has been serving as Israel’s envoy to the global body for the past year, will take office as one of the assembly’s 21 vice presidents in September. He is the third Israeli diplomat to be elected for the position.

If Muslim Brotherhood candidate Mohammed Mursi were to become president, Egypt’s capital would no longer be Cairo, but would be Jerusalem, a prominent Egyptian cleric said at a presidential campaign rally, which was aired by an Egyptian private television channel.

“Our capital shall not be Cairo, Mecca or Medina. It shall be Jerusalem with God’s will. Our chants shall be: ‘millions of martyrs will march towards Jerusalem,’” Safwat Hagazy said, according to the video aired by Egypt’s religious Annas TV.

Forty-five years ago this week, the Israel Defense Forces liberated the Old City of Jerusalem and re-united Israel’s capital. Today, most of the battles that took place back then are almost a distant memory. Few recall that on the eve of the Six-Day War most of the brigades of Jordanian Army were deployed right next to the Green Line and encircled Jerusalem on three sides. Moreover, an Iraqi expeditionary force was poised to join them across the Jordan River. When the Jordanian artillery opened fire, nearly 6,000 artillery shells fell on Jewish neighborhoods in the western side of Jerusalem, leaving 1,000 Israelis wounded.
