A CNN Money article on the Middle East dropped Israel’s name from a map of the Middle East that accompanied a story on the turmoil in the region.

CNN Erases Israel From the Map

The article, entitled “Beyond ISIS: 2016’s scariest geopolitical hot spots,” naturally featured the ongoing war in Syria and the image that originally accompanied the article was a map of the Middle East. But the name Palestina, Spanish or Portuguese for Palestine stood in for Israel on the map.

CNN later replaced the story’s photo with one showing a scene of destruction from the Syrian city of Aleppo.

Readers responded with anger to the piece’s original photo that did not feature the name of the Jewish state.

“Please replace the article’s main image with one of an accurate Middle East map: including Israel,” one reader said.
“Why is my country erased on this map?” another reader asked.

The media watchdog group HonestReporting said that CNN’s choice of illustration was completely unacceptable.

At a time when the state’s very legitimacy is being called into question by vicious anti-Israel extremists, any message that Israel does not belong in the Middle East plays into this false narrative and feeds those like the Iranian ayatollahs who wish to see Israel erased from the map,” HonestReporting Managing Editor Simon Plosker wrote.

“How many times can CNN keep making these shoddy errors before the network takes remedial action to address its Israel problem?” Plosker added.
