Israel’s New 50 Shekel Bill Unveiled

Bank of Israel’s new 50 shekel banknote presented ahead of its entry to circulation, features the likeness of Hebrew poet Shaul Tchernichovsky.

The Bank of Israel on Wednesday released the first samples to the Israeli market of its new 50 shekel (just under $15) banknote that is posed to enter circulation.

Training was held in Jerusalem to prepare businesses to recognize and accept the bill and to reduce confusion as the bill enters common usage. Specifications were provided so that vending machines and other devices will be calibrated in advance to accept the note. Continue Reading »

Gazans turn to bartering with lack of copper coins

 

 

Import-ban on copper leads Gazans to melt Israeli coins into electrical wiring, causing 1/2-shekel coin shortage.

Gazans have been running low on Israeli coin currency for a while, partly due to an Israeli-imposed ban on copper imports. The creative solution engineered by Gazans was to melt down change to create copper wire. But no one could have expected the result – half-shekel and 10 agorot coins have become a rare commodity.

Shekel-dollar rate passes the 4 NIS = 1 US$ threshold

Exchange rate reaches the threshold for the first time since early 2009; Shekel-euro exchange rate reaches 1 NIS = 4.911 €.

In inter-bank foreign currency trading Wednesday the shekel continued to weaken against the dollar as the US currency gained ground against the world’s major currencies. For the first time since June 2009, the shekel-dollar exchange rate pushed through the NIS 4/$ threshold.

In morning trading the shekel was up 0.37 percent compared with Tuesday’s representative rate, to NIS 3.997/$, having briefly gone over NIS 4/$ at the opening, and the shekel-euro exchange rate was up 0.38% to NIS 4.911/€. Continue Reading »
