3 Attempts to Smuggle Weapons into Gaza Foiled by Egypt

Sources: On 3 occasions since Operation Pillar of Defense, Egypt has prevented the smuggling of weapons into Gaza.

Western sources have revealed that Egypt has prevented three instances of large-scale smuggling of weapons into Gaza since the end of Operation Pillar of Defense, the Israel Defense website reported on Tuesday.

According to the report, the activity against the weaponry smuggling is part of Egyptian-U.S. coordination, agreed upon in the discussions involving Secretary of State Hillary Clinton two days before the end of the operation.

Western sources said that the agreement includes assistance with U.S. technological measures made available for Egyptian use, and intelligence cooperation in order to counter the smuggling of weapons. Continue Reading »

A hundred French, European and Egyptian activists are hoping to enter the Gaza strip for the first time through Egypt next week, French coordinator Olivia Zemor, of the organization “Welcome to Palestine,” told journalists on Thursday.

Where there’s a will, there’s a way. In April Israel detained and then released activists who had arrived at Ben-Gurion International Airport.

Egyptian Security seizes arms shipment en route to Hamas via northern Sinai

Palestinian, Ma’an news agency cites Egyptian security official saying that captured truck held Katyusha rockets and high-grade explosives.

 

Egyptian forces seized a truck carrying arms en route to the northern Sinai, a report by Palestinian news agency Ma’an said on Tuesday, adding that the vehicle carried Grad-type katyusha rockets as well as high-grade weapons.

Palestinian President Abbas urges Egypt to destroy Hamas’ underground tunnels

For first time, Palestinian Authority publicly  asks Egypt to destroy tunnels along its border with Gaza to tighten blockade.

Buoyed by growing tensions between Hamas and Egypt in wake of last week’s terror attack in Sinai, the Palestinian Authority Saturday called on the Egyptians to tighten the blockade on the Gaza Strip by destroying all underground tunnels along their shared border.

The PA said that the tunnels do not contribute to the economy in the Gaza Strip and are being used only by a small number of people for personal gain.

Hamas’ Ismail Haniyeh urges Egypt to re-open Rafah crossing

The head of the Hamas government in Gaza urged Egypt on Thursday to open a vital border crossing closed since gunmen killed 16 Egyptian guards in neighboring Sinai on Sunday.

Ismail Haniyeh pledged his support for Egypt’s investigations of the attack, which has led to the biggest Egyptian military assault in the Sinai Peninsula in nearly 40 years.

“At the same time I call upon my brother, Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi to open the Rafah crossing, to regain a lifeline for Gaza,” Haniyeh said at a dinner ending the daylong Ramadan fast. Continue Reading »

Egypt began work to seal off smuggling tunnels into the Gaza Strip on Tuesday, a security source said, amidst an uptick in public discussions by Israeli leaders over Egypt’s willingness and capability of policing the increasingly lawless Sinai Peninsula.

The move came two days after gunmen shot dead 16 Egyptian border guards in an attack blamed partly on Palestinian Islamists.

Khartoum points to Israel after car blast in E. Sudan

Foreign Ministry declines to comment on “generic allegations” that Israel behind explosion in Sudan’s east, in area used as an arms smuggling route to Gaza Strip via neighboring Egypt.

KHARTOUM – One person was killed when a car exploded in the eastern Sudanese city of Port Sudan on Tuesday in what the government said resembled a blast last year that it blamed on an Israeli missile strike.

An Israeli government spokesman declined to comment on the explosion in Sudan’s east, which analysts say is used as an arms smuggling route to the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip via neighboring Egypt.

Yigal Palmor, spokesman for Israel’s Foreign Ministry, told Reuters: “I’m not going to respond to generic allegations.”
