Gas mask distribution centers closed after 23 years of service

Defense officials determined the present threat to Israelis has decreased substantially due to the int’l teams dismantling of Syria’s chemical weapons.

Decisions on future distribution will be made based on upcoming threat assessments.

Gas mask kits will no longer be handed out in Israel as of Thursday, in accordance with a government decision to close distribution centers.

The decision stemmed from the defense establishment’s belief that the threat to Israeli citizens has decreased substantially due to the dismantling of Syria’s chemical weapons.

After Thursday, gas mask production will be limited and the kits will be distributed to emergency service teams alone.

Security cabinet: Gas mask distribution ends after February

 

The inner cabinet’s decision will be reevaluated at the end of the year, following their assessment by defense authorities.

Israel will discontinue the distribution of gas masks to the public at the end of February, the security cabinet decided on Sunday.

The decision was taken in accordance with the assessment of the defense establishment that the danger of a chemical attack against Israel had declined substantially – primarily due to Syria’s decommissioning of its chemical weapons.

The manufacture of gas masks will continue at a reduced pace after February, the Prime Minister’s Bureau said in a statement, but they will be for the use of emergency teams only and won’t be distributed to the public. Continue Reading »

Will Home Front Command Stop Providing Gas Masks?

Because of defense situation changes with Syria dismantling chemical weapons, the gov’t is expected to stop its gas mask distribution program.

Channel 2 reports tonight that in light of the changing security situation – as well as Syria’s initiative to stop its chemical weapons program – the Security Cabinet is expected to stop producing and distributing gas masks.

A rush on gas masks exploded earlier this year after reports surfaced of Syrian chemical weapons use this summer, amid rumors of a possible US strike on the region. In response, the government launched a distribution program to issue gas mask kits to all registered citizens, leaving long lines and expensive ebay listings in its wake. Abbas’ PA Demands Jerusalem Provide it with Gas Masks

Although seeking independence & statehood, the Palestinian Authority claims it’s Israel’s responsibility to provide gas masks for its civilians that are not under Israel law, but under PA jurisdictions.

Israel has been distributing gas masks to its citizens over the last two weeks amid fears of reprisals against the Jewish state, following anticipated US military intervention in neighboring Syria.

Netanyahu orders gas masks for every Israeli

With Syria’s now-proven willingness to use chemical weapons, the possible threat of an unconventional attack brought Netanyahu to insists it’s time to get protection for all Israelis.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu this week ordered the defense establishment to urgently get gas masks and protective kits into the hands of all Israelis, according to Israel’s Channel 10 News.

Currently, only an estimated 42 percent of Israelis have up-to-date gas masks and protective kits. Budgetary constraints in recent years prevented both the manufacturing and distribution of enough masks to protect the entire population. Continue Reading »
