Many ordinary Jordanians, as well as others in government circles, complain that tens of thousands of Syrian refugees who have fled from the conflict at home are draining the country’s meager water resources.

In recent weeks, people have demonstrated in southern and northern villages for not receiving water for the past two months, burning tyres, blocking roads and seizing a Water Authority tanker.

Trouble at Maariv And Haaretz – Strike set for Thursday

Maariv & Haaretz newspapers suffer economic aftershocks of Israeli “social protest” that they fueled themselves last year.

Ultra-leftist newspaper Haaretz will not be printed Thursday. Its workers prepared Wednesday for an expected eight-hour strike against planned layoffs.

Haaretz itself reported that employees would begin the work stoppage at 4:00 p.m. (1400 GMT) “in protest over the planned dismissal of up to 100 employees and the claim that management is not negotiating with them over the firings and other cutbacks.”

“The sanctions may affect publication of Thursday’s Haaretz newspaper in both Hebrew and English, but are not expected to affect Friday’s paper,” it added. Continue Reading »

Palestinians protest cost of living by taking to streets

Israelis are not the only ones protesting price hikes and a general increase in the cost of living: Palestinians across the West Bank protested on Tuesday against the rising price of petrol, while police forces attempted to restore order.

Fuad Shubaki, the general director of the Palestinian Petroleum Corporation, recently announced that the Palestinian Authority is looking into the possibility of importing petrol from other countries in coordination with Israel.

Food in Israel 20% more expensive than OECD’

In final report, Kedmi Committee on food prices blames market concentration for dramatic increase in food prices.

 

The Kedmi Committee submitted its final report on the food market on Monday, recommending that the government work to restrict the market share of leading suppliers and retailers, encourage small businesses and remove import barriers.

The committee, headed by Industry, Trade and Labor Ministry director-general Sharon Kedmi, was established by the government one year ago, following a consumer revolt against dairy manufacturers Tnuva, Strauss and Tara.

Israeli consumers paid 10-20 percent more for food in 2008-2010 than their counterparts in the rest of the OECD group of developed economies, the final report concluded.
