The appointment marks two historic firsts:

  • Carmela Shamir will become the first female Israeli ambassador to a Muslim state;
  • With her deputy, Hagit Muallem, also being a woman, the mission to Tashkent will become the first Israeli embassy in a Muslim state completely in female hands.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Appointments Committee confirmed the departure of Shamir and Muallem on a mission that is considered both complex and not without it security threats, considering Uzbekistan’s close proximity to Iran.

Almost 95 percent of Uzbekistan’s citizens are Muslims. Nevertheless, the Muslim nation has readily confirmed the appointments of both Shamir and Muallem, considering them to be capable and accomplished diplomats.

Israel currently has 12 embassies around the world headed by women, and will soon add three more to that list.
