On Int’l Holocaust Memorial Day, EU’s Aston says “never forget”

EU’s foreign policy chief Ashton paid tribute to Holocaust survivors.

Germany’s Chancellor Merkel reiterated, responsibility for Nazi crimes is eternal.

European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton paid a special tribute to Holocaust survivors, in a statement released on International Holocaust Remembrance Day on Sunday.

Ashton said that the survivors of the Holocaust “remind us of this tragedy that we must never forget.”

“Today we remember the victims of the Holocaust. We honor every one of the six million who were brutally murdered in this darkest period of European history,” Ashton stated.

She stressed the importance of remembering that the crime was not perpetrated by a few individuals, but that many were involved directly and indirectly.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu agreed to disagree on the question of plans to build more settlements in the West Bank, the chancellor said on Thursday. “We agreed that we disagree on this,” Merkel said at a news conference with Netanyahu in Berlin.

“We in Germany believe the work on a two-state solution must be continued … we must keep trying to come to negotiations and one-sided moves should be avoided,” she added.

BERLIN – German Chancellor Angela Merkel reassured Israel of her country’s support on Saturday, two days after Berlin disappointed the Jewish state by abstaining in a UN vote on the Palestinians’ status.

Germany, which will host Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and many of his ministers next week, abstained in Thursday’s vote in the UN General Assembly which provided de facto recognition of a sovereign Palestinian state.

European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton and German Chancellor Angela Merkel both issued strong statements in support of Israel’s right to defend itself on Friday.

Ashton added that she hoped Egyptian Prime Minister Hesham Kandil’s visit to Gazaon Friday morning would calm the situation.“The rocket attacks by Hamas and other factions in Gaza, which began this current crisis are totally unacceptable for any government and must stop,” she said.

Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel told her party the country risked becoming a “laughingstock” over a court ruling calling religious circumcision a criminal act, according to a report Monday.

The mass-circulation daily Bild said in an article to be published Tuesday that Merkel warned the board of her conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU) that Germany must restore legal protection for circumcision.

“I do not want Germany to be the only country in the world in which Jews cannot practice their rites,” Bild quoted Merkel as saying, citing several CDU members who attended the meeting. Continue Reading »
