Former Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon testified on Thursday against former Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman, in the latter’s trial on charges of fraud and breach of trust in the “ambassador affair.”

Ayalon is the only witness who claims Lieberman actively promoted former ambassador Zeev Ben Aryeh for the Latvia ambassador post.

In his testimony, Ayalon recalled his meeting with Lieberman before the appointment committee’s meeting which appointed Ben Aryeh: “I was in his office, we discussed political matters and by the end of the talk he told me that Ben Aryeh must be appointed to the Riga post.” Continue Reading »

Earlier, Netanyahu spoke on the phone with to his Turkish counterpart and apologized for the deaths of nine Turks in a 2010 raid on a Gaza-bound flotilla.

Lieberman says Yisrael Beiteinu will oppose any settlement freeze

Prior to Obama’s visit, Yisrael Beiteinu chairmain says Israel-Palestinian conflict can’t be solved and stressed that his party will oppose any type of construction freeze.

Yisrael Beiteinu Chairman Avigdor Lieberman said he does not believe the Israeli-Palestinian conflict can be solved and rejected any possible freeze in settlement construction.

“After seeing no result following the 10-month freeze I said I would oppose any freeze inside or outside the (major settlement) blocs,” Lieberman said. “We are willing to make gestures but they cannot be one-sided. Yisrael Beiteinu will fiercely oppose any attempt to resume the freeze.”

Lieberman: Defense Committee Hearings Closed to Media

 

IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Benny Gantz appeared before the Knesset Foreign Affairs & Defense Committee, and in line with a new policy, no information was passed to media on what was said.

The Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee decided on Tuesday to impose a blackout on an appearance of Israel Defense Forces Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Benny Gantz before the committee, even though Gantz’s statements contained no secret information, according to people who were present.

The head of the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee Avigdor Lieberman approved the decision to bar the media from reporting on some of the committee’s meetings.

Lieberman: Yair Lapid won’t be Foreign Minister

Former foreign minister Avigdor Lieberman accused his former deputy, Danny Ayalon, of a lack of integrity, in a Saturday television interview. Ayalon said earlier in the day that the Foreign Ministry under Lieberman “speaks loudly and carries a mini carrot.”

Yisrael Beiteinu head Avigdor Lieberman, until recently the Foreign Minister, reacted with joy Friday as Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas threatened to quit if negotiations do not resume. Abbas has refused to negotiate in absence of several Israeli concessions, including a complete freeze on construction east of the 1949 armistice line.
According to Lieberman, Israel “can’t wait” for Abbas to follow through on his threat.

“We congratulate Abu Mazen [Abbas] for reaching the correct conclusion, that only his leave from the PA leadership will allow the diplomatic process to resume,” Lieberman said.

Attorney General Yehuda Weinstein on Thursday announced his decision to charge Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman with fraud and breach of trust for working to promote former Israeli ambassador to Belarus Ze’ev Ben Aryeh without disclosing the fact that Ben Aryeh had illegally leaked information about an investigation against him. However, the attorney general said a more serious corruption case against Lieberman has been closed.
