29% of European Jews considered emigrating due to extent of antisemitism

1 in 5 of the respondents said they had personally experienced at least 1 incident of physical assault or anti-Semitic verbal abuse in the year leading up to the survey.

Nearly a third of respondents to a survey on anti-Semitism in Europe said they “seriously considered emigrating” because of perceived anti-Semitism.

In the survey among 5,847 Jews from nine European Union member states, 29 percent of all respondents said that they considered emigrating in recent years because they did “not feel safe” living in their countries as Jews, according to Morten Kjaerum, the director of the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights which conducted the research among Jews from Sweden, France, Belgium, Britain, Germany, Italy, Hungary, Romania and Latvia. Irish journalist dons kippa to assess anti-Semitism in Sweden

 

“As an Irish person abroad I’ve never felt remotely threatened but wearing the kippa for a few hours was enough to instill feelings of fear,” writes Patrick Reilly.

 

 

An Irish journalist donned a kippa for a day in the southern Swedish city of Malmo, in an effort to experience what it might be like for Jews there, who have been known to suffer from anti-Semitism, The Local reported last week.

European Council Wants Ban on Circumcision

Calling circumcision of children a violation of human rights, the European Council calls for a legal ban until age 15.

The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, a pan-European group, has passed a resolution condemning circumcision of children as a violation of human rights, the Jewish Telegraphic Agency (JTA) reports.

The resolution passed with 78 in favor to just 13 against. Fifteen people abstained from the vote.

Representatives called to ban “certain operations and practices…before a child is old enough to be consulted.” The age suggested for allowing circumcision was 15. Continue Reading »
