Jerusalem Construction ‘ is Merely a Drop in the Ocean’

Jerusalem city representative enthusiastically welcomes the 200 new housing units, but remarks, ‘I would be happier if it were 8,000.’

The decision to allow construction projects in Jerusalem neighborhoods east and south of the 1949 armistice line is a good one, says Attorney Herzl Yehezkel, a city representative from the neighborhood of Homat Shmuel.

However, he told Arutz Sheva, Jerusalem’s fast-growing population needs far more housing than the few hundred units that will be built.

“I would be happy if they were building 8,000 units instead of 800,” he said. “The little bit that they are marketing is merely a drop in the ocean.” Continue Reading »

Finance Minister Yair Lapid lashed out Sunday at the decision to build more than one thousand new homes in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, calling it “a double mistake.”

Lapid’s comments came on the heels of similar condemnation by Meretz leader, Zahava Gal-On, who accused the government of trying to stymie the nascent peace negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians.

“Announcing the decision to market 1,200 housing units in east Jerusalem and in the larger settlement blocs at this time is a double mistake,” Lapid said in a statement.

Gov’t agency ready to build 10,000 new homes

Housing Minister Uri Ariel, urges Netanyahu to solve housing crisis by approving the 10,000 units planned over the pre-1967 lines.

 

 

 

Plans for 10,000 homes over the pre-1967 lines were ready to be marketed in Jerusalem and West Bank settlements, the Minister for Construction and Housing Uri Ariel (Bayit Yehudi) said on Wednesday as he called on Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu to solve his housing crisis by approving the projects.

Carmiel Official: 600 Families Need Housing Now

600 families are waiting for housing in Carmiel to become available.

There is a desperate shortage of public housing in the city of Carmiel in northern Israel, and if something is not done soon, some families on the waiting list may take “extreme measures,” Deputy Mayor of Carmiel Rina Greenberg warned Wednesday in an interview with Arutz Sheva.

Most of the roughly 600 families waiting for public housing are immigrant families, she said. Some have been waiting for as long as 15 years.

In the meantime, the families receive a housing stipend from the government, but it often does not cover the cost of rent. Continue Reading »

New housings in Jerusalem approved on eve of Kerry visit

JERUSALEM (JTA) — The Jerusalem municipality issued construction permits to build 69 new housing units in the eastern Jerusalem neighborhood of Har Homa.

Wednesday’s approval comes a day before the planned arrival of U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry as he attempts to bring Israel and the Palestinians back to the peace negotiating table.

The housing units are part of a 1,000-housing unit project approved in August 2011 for Har Homa and other nearby communities.

No new building for Jews in Galilee

 

The gov’t is starting new housing construction in the Arab town Sakhnin and selling new apartments in the Arab village of Umm el-Fahm, but there are almost no new housing construction in any of the Jewish communities.

But, in the farming community of Migdal, only 30 housing units for young couples have been allowed in the last few years.

Tenders to build 1,500 units in the Ramat Shlomo neighborhood of east Jerusalem have been delayed by at least three weeks, despite Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu’s announcement last week that there was no change in policy on settlement building in the area, Army Radio reported Monday.

US & PA condemn Israeli plans for building 296 homes in Beit El

West Bank Construction Freeze in Effect

Prime Minister tells Housing Minister to halt all new construction projects in Judea and Samaria.

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu has requested that the Housing Ministry freeze new construction projects in Judea and Samaria (Shomron), IDF Radio (Galei Tzahal) reports.

Netanyahu met with Housing Minister Uri Ariel and asked him to halt promotion of new projects in the region, including by no longer putting up for bids tenders on new projects.

Just days ago Ariel said that if the state budget did not include funding for promised construction in Judea and Samaria, such as the planned project in E1 in Maaleh Adumim, his party would not support the budget. Continue Reading »

Housing market for January sees fewer homes bought

A total of 9,100 apartments were bought in Israel in January, a 15% drop compared to December, following an increase in the number of transactions in the three previous months.

Compared to January 2012, which will still affected by the social protest, there was a 22% rise in the number of transactions.
