Rivlin: Time for Knesset to pass constitution

The next Knesset is more likely to draft a constitution, Knesset Speaker Reuven Rivlin told a forum at the Israel Democracy Institute on Monday.

Six new MKs required to renounce foreign citizenship before entering Knesset

Newly elected members of the 19th Knesset will first have to give up their foreign citizenship before they are sworn in as MKs.

 

Six incoming members of the 19th Knesset will have to give up their foreign citizenship before they are sworn in as new MKs on February 5.

The Knesset requires any citizen with dual citizenship to cancel his or her additional nationalities before being sworn in. Knesset Secretary Yardena Maller-Horowitz has already contacted incoming MKs to inform them of the law.Two new MKs – Bayit Yehudi leader Naftali Bennett and Yesh Atid’s Dov Lipman – will no longer be American citizens.

Over 5.6 million Israelis will go to the polls today

In electing Israel’s 19th gov’t, approximately 1,000 polling stations will open at 7 A.M. Tuesday in towns, cities, hospitals, & prisons through out the country.

 

The polls will open at 7 A.M. on Tuesday for Israel to elect its 19th Knesset, with more than 5.65 million Israelis eligible to vote.

The approximately 1,000 polling stations located in towns, hospitals and prisons around the country will stay open until 10 P.M. in most locales, but will close at 8 P.M. in small towns and hospitals.

To cast a ballot, voters will need to present an Israeli ID card, a valid passport or a valid driver’s license. Continue Reading »

Knesset approves use of national biometric identification database for a trial period of 2 years.

Volunteers can submit their face scans & fingerprints to receive “smart” passports and/or identification cards

The Knesset approved the launch of a national biometric identification system on Wednesday, which will be tested at the beginning of 2013. The decision to begin using the system was made by a joint committee comprising the Science and Technology Committee, Internal Affairs and Environment Committee and Constitution, Law and Justice Committee.

The biometric database trial is launched.

Israeli-Arab MKs Zoabi and Tibi are facing disqualification petitions

Israel must act strongly against MKs Hanin Zoabi & Ahmad Tibi who exploit Israel’s democracy with goal of destroying it from within.

Three months before the general elections, the Central Elections Committee fielded two requests on Tuesday to ban Israeli-Arab MKs Hanin Zoabi (National Democratic Assembly) and Ahmed Tibi (Ra’am-Ta’al) from running for Knesset seats in the upcoming vote.

Likud MK Ofir Akunis demanded that Zoabi be disqualified, citing the legal clause stipulating that “a list of candidates will not participate in elections for the Knesset, and an individual will not be a candidate for the Knesset, if the stated goals or actions of the list or individual support armed struggle by a foreign nation or a terrorist organization against the State of Israel.” Continue Reading »

Elections set for January as Knesset Dissolves

Knesset approves bill to dissolve itself by a vote of 100 to 0.

Elections will be held January 22.

The Knesset officially voted on Monday night to dissolve itself and head for elections.

Shortly before midnight, the Knesset Committee approved the bill calling for the dissolution of the Knesset for a second and third reading. 15 members of the committee supported the bill and no one opposed or abstained.

The bill was then passed to the Knesset, which approved its second reading by a majority of 97 to one (the one who “opposed” was MK Tzipi Hotovely who had mistakenly pressed the button voting against the motion) and then approved its third reading by a majority of 100 MKs. Continue Reading »

MK Tibi demands Knesset to ban Marzel over his Facebook post :)

A parliamentary aide & Hebron activist, wrote he’s sorry he didn’t “do what was necessary” upon seeing Arab MK in Knesset.

 

MK Ahmed Tibi (UAL-Ta’al) demanded on Thursday that extreme right-wing activist Baruch Marzel be banned from the Knesset after he posted a status the Arab MK interpreted as a thinly-veiled death threat.

Ahead of Yom Kippur, when Jews traditionally apologize for their sins from the past year, Marzel wrote: “The main desecration of God’s name, for which I must apologize, is that there are so many enemies among us that I have yet to expel, especially in Hebron.”

Ahmed Dabah to become Kadima’s first Arab Member of the Knesset

Ahmed Dabah, a former mayor, brought Mofaz 1,121 primary votes; swearing-in makes him the 17th non-Jewish MK.

Ahmed Dabah is expected to become Kadima’s first Arab MK, replacing Avi Dichter who resigned from the Knesset Tuesday to become home front defense minister.

Dichter called Dabah, 57, Kadima’s strongest Arab activist, on Monday night, to notify him that he would become an MK soon. The two wished each other luck in their new jobs.

Dabah brought Kadima leader Shaul Mofaz 1,121 votes from Deir-el-Assad – where he was mayor – in this year’s primary. Mofaz got more votes in the northern town than his and former party leader Tzipi Livni’s combined votes from Tel Aviv (1,112).

Eritrea will not accept the forced repatriation of its nationals living in Israel, Ambassador Tesfamariam Tekeste said on Monday, at a lively and at times heated meeting of the Knesset Committee on Foreign Workers.

Tekeste said his government’s position remains that it will welcome those who choose to return and will help the Israeli government determine which migrants are Eritreans. He also said his government would ensure the safety of those returning and would not prosecute them for leaving the country, except those who skipped out on mandatory military service.

Knesset to mark Armenian genocide on eve of publication of Gaza flotilla report

Recognition of Armenian genocide perpetrated by Turkey comes alongside Turkish lawsuit against senior Israeli officials involved in IDF raid on the Gaza-bound ship, the Mavi Marmara.

On the eve of the publication of the State Comptroller’s report regarding the 2009 Gaza flotilla, the Knesset is expected to hold a public discussion about the genocide of the Armenian people, as requested by MK Zahava Gal-On (Meretz).

Knesset chairperson Reuven Rivlin decided to permit the debate for Tuesday, following the Turkish decision to try senior Israeli officials in court for their involvement in the IDF raid on the Gaza-bound ship the Mavi Marmara, and the publication of the State Comptroller’s report on the affair on Wednesday. The Knesset’s House Committee on Monday gave the green light to accelerate the ratification of a bill calling for the dissolution of the parliament.

The session quickly turned stormy as Knesset members debated the issue, as well as another piece of legislation that has found itself in the center of the political tumult – the Tal Law, which effectively grants army service exemptions to haredim.

Undercover soldiers hurled stones in the “general direction” of IDF soldiers as part of their activity to counter weekly demonstrations in the Palestinian village of Bil’in, the commander of the Israeli Prison Service’s elite “Masada” unit revealed during his recent testimony in the trial of MK Mohammed Barakeh (Hadash).

Barakeh has been charged with assaulting a border guard in Bil’in who was attempting to arrest a demonstrator.

Israel’s Haredi parties praying to stay in power

The Haredi parties may well find themselves in the opposition after the upcoming election. They hope to use ‘enemies’ like Yair Lapid and Avigdor Lieberman to unify the camp.

 

The ultra-Orthodox parties began their election campaign last week with an attempt to close ranks in the Lithuanian (non-Hasidic ) camp. Members of Knesset Moshe Gafni and Uri Maklev of Degel Hatorah (the partner of the Hasidic party Agudat Yisrael in the United Torah Judaism faction ) visited the town of Elad in order to meet with a group of what can be called the “new ultra-Orthodox.” They have no clout in any node of power, certainly not in the party that sets the tone in the Haredi public.
