U.S. Senate Calls for Moment of Silence During London Olympics

 U.S. Senate unanimously passed a resolution urging the  International Olympic Committee (IOC) to mark one minute of silence

 

 

As the world looks forward to the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, many have called on the International Olympic Committee to recognize one of the darkest days in sports history, the murder of 11 athletes and coaches form the Israeli Olympic team at the 1972 Munich Olympics by Palestinian terrorists known as “Black September.”

On Tuesday, the U.S. Senate unanimously passed a resolution urging the  International Olympic Committee (IOC) to mark one minute of silence during the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games, joining Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon and more than 81,000 signatories of a Move.org

Report: Al-Qaida planning to crash U.S. airline during London Olympics

According to the Sunday Times, a Norwegian who was trained in Yemen plans to crash the plane on a suicide mission; British authorities say there is a shortage of personnel to carry out proper security screenings.

 

 

The al-Qaida branch in the Arabian Peninsula is believed to be planning a terror attack during the Olympic Games in London, scheduled to begin at the end of the month. According to a report in today’s Sunday Times, quoting intelligence services, the organization has recruited a Norwegian Muslim convert who was supposed to hijack a U.S. passenger plane and crash it on a suicide mission. Hareidi Youth to Bear Olympic Torch

A hareidi young man with seven charities to his name will carry the Olympic Torch in London.

A hareidi-religious young man from London will be among those carrying the Olympic Torch in Britain this summer. Efraim Goldstein, 22, was chosen due to his long history of volunteerism.

Goldstein had established seven volunteer organizations by the age of 16. The groups he set up now have a total of several hundred volunteers.

Efraim currently volunteers for the Shomrim Patrol, an emergency search and rescue group that he established. He also runs a soup kitchen for the homeless, and visits sick children through the Helping Hand organization. Continue Reading »

US Senate urges Munich Olympic moment of silence

Legislative body passes resolution calling on Olympic C’tee to commemorate Munich massacre at upcoming London games.

WASHINGTON — The US Senate unanimously passed a resolution urging the International Olympic Committee to observe a moment of silence at the 2012 London Olympics for the Munich 11.

The Senate resolution, which passed Monday,  is part of a larger global effort calling on the IOC to honor the 11 Israeli athletes and coaches who were murdered at the 1972 Games in Munich by members of the Palestinian terrorist group Black September. Sens. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) and Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) introduced the measure.

SYDNEY – A rainbow coalition of Australian politicians are calling for a minute of silence at the London Olympics in memory of the 11 Israeli athletes and coaches murdered at the 1972 Munich Games.

About 100 legislators in Canberra voted unanimously on Tuesday for a motion urging the International Olympic Committee to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the terror attack during next month’s games. Continue Reading »

A Moment Of Silence For The ‘Munich 11’: Politics As Usual For The IOC?

Jacques Rogge, IOC president, may have resolved that inclusion of the minute of silence is likely to fan the flames of the Arab-Israeli conflict and lead some nations to threaten to pull their delegations, if not actually do so.

 

 

With delegations from 205 countries, more than 100 heads of state, tens of thousands of journalists, hundreds of thousands of volunteers, and millions of fans planning to attend, this summer’s Olympic Games in London are seen as a prime backdrop for a terrorist attack. For the better part of the past decade, and armed with a £600 million budget, the stable of British security forces have been preparing to foil any such attempt.
