Rescue services were called into action Tuesday night to help stranded residents throughout Israel, as flooding from the ongoing storm that has hit nearly the entire country this week continued.

In the Haifa area on Tuesday night, IDF helicopters and crews from Unit 669 rescued 15 people stuck on the roof of a building in Baka al-Gharbiya, as rising water levels threatened to sweep them away.

Israel braces for heavy rains, snow & strong winds

Meteorologists expect one of the rainiest weeks in recent memory, with showers falling from the Galilee to the Negev and 100 km/h winds.

Heavy rain fell from the North to the Negev overnight Saturday, with the stormy winter weather expected to continue on Sunday and throughout the week.

Forecasters expect the coming week to be one of the rainiest in recent memory with some 100 millimeters of rain expected in central Israel and as much as 250mm. expected to fall in the North.

Mount Hermon is also expected to see continued snowfall throughout the week.

Sea of Galilee water level rising sooner than expected

Israel is anticipating above-average rainfall this year, a pleasant contradiction to the past seven years of drought.

Israeli officials now believe that the region will receive more rain than expected this winter, bringing the Sea of Galilee back up to a level it has not been at in over 10 years.

Speaking to Israel’s Ma’ariv newspaper, Israel Water Authority official Dr. Amir Givati noted that due to abundant rainfall already this winter, the Sea of Galilee already began to rise in late October, more than a month before is typically starts to rise in the annual rain cycle. A burst of late-morning rain brought minor flooding to a number of cities in the North on Friday as an unusually resilient summer was suddenly relegated to sweat-filled memories of months past.

In Haifa, the rains flooded at least one retirement home and local media reported water filling a number of local streets, Army Radio reported. Firefighters dispatched to the retirement home helped evacuate the elderly residents. Continue Reading »

Kinneret rises 20 centimeters after Israel’s stormy weekend

Increase comes after heavy snowfall in northern Israel and Jerusalem, and as rains inundate Tel Aviv.

A weekend of heavy rains and snowstorms throughout the country contributed to a 20 centimeter rise in the level of Lake Kinneret, one of Israel’s primary sources of drinking water.

The Kinneret’s water level has risen 30 centimeters since the beginning of the current round of storms last week. Since the beginning of the current storm system, Jerusalem has seen 168 millimeters of rain, Ariel 93, and Tel Aviv 58 millimeters.
