Israel to freeze joint water project over Jordan refusal to reopen Israel’s embassy

Israel sent a message to Amman that Jerusalem will not allow the Red-Dead Sea Canal Project to begin unless Jordan reopens the Israeli embassy, closed after an Israeli security guard shot dead a Jordanian who reportedly attacked him with a screwdriver.

Some three months after an investigation was opened after an Israeli security guard fired at an armed Jordanian citizen, Israel is threatening to take economic measures against Amman.

According to a report by Hebrew media outlet Maariv, Israel has sent a clear message to Jordan in past days that Israel will not go through with the terms of the Red-Dead Sea Conveyance Project unless Jordan reopens the Israeli embassy. Continue Reading »

Trump Envoy Catapults Israeli-Palestinian Water Deal Previously Stalled for Years

Signed by Jordan in 2015, President Trump’s US envoy Jason Greenblatt hailed the Palestinian signing of the historic water/power agreement by saying this deal “will lead to economic improvement in the lives of the Palestinians.”

US Special Representative for International Negotiations Jason Greenblatt announced Thursday that Israel and the Palestinians have reached an agreement concerning the long-discussed Red Sea-Dead Sea Canal, which includes the sale of 33 million cubic meters of water to the Palestinian Authority to relieve the water situation there.

Greenblatt, at a press conference with Regional Cooperation Minister Tzahi Hanegbi and PA Water Authority head Mazen Ghuneim, said this agreement and the accord signed Monday between Israel and the PA that will significantly increase the power supply to Jenin are examples of how the two sides can cooperate to improve Palestinian living conditions. Israel, Jordan issue $800m tender for joint Red-Dead canal project

 

Red-Dead project pipeline is expected to be 180 kilometers long, pass through both Israeli & Jordanian territory, include a desalination plant producing 80 million cubes of potable water a year, and two hydro-power plants, beside preventing the Dead Sea from drying up.

Israel and Jordan are pushing forward with a plan to construct a water-carrying canal from the Red Sea to the Dead Sea with the hopes that it will help stop the Dead Sea from shrinking further.
