Female MKs oppose rabbinical ruling requiring women pay child support

 

OPPOSES: MK Zehava Galon: “The decision will harm women and could be used by men as a bargaining chip against them.”
SUPPORTS: Rabbi Eliyahu Heishrik of the Chief Rabbinate: “We need to also consider the situation in which the man makes less money than the woman.”

Female MKs from the opposition and coalition alike expressed outrage on Wednesday following a decision by the Chief Rabbinate to require some women to pay child support when couple divorce. Until now, only men have been required to pay child support.

In a heated debate during a meeting of the Knesset Constitution, Law and Justice Committee, MK Rachel Azaria (Kulanu) said, “The man holds the ‘whip’ of providing a ‘get’ [religious divorce document] in his hands, and women are prepared to pay everything they have to buy their freedom.”

Abbas: For the 17th Time….Freeze Construction or Else…

Mahmoud Abbas threatens to end peace talks and turn to int’l institutions unless Netanyahu freezes construction in Judea & Samaria.

Palestinian Authority (PA) Chairman Mahmoud Abbas is threatening to end the negotiations with Israel unless it freezes construction in Judea and Samaria.

Abbas’s threats came during his meeting on Monday with Meretz Chairwoman MK Zehava Galon. “I will put the keys on the table and turn to international organizations,” he declared during that meeting.

“The only way we will agree to extend the talks is if Netanyahu announces a settlement freeze and the release of other prisoners beyond the next scheduled release,” Abbas told Galon. Continue Reading »

Defense Minister Yaalon: I Blocked Rajoub’s Entry into Israel

Defense Minister explains why he turned down Meretz’s request to host the inciting Palestinian Authority Minister.

Defense Minister Moshe Yaalon explained Saturday evening that he had decided to block Palestinian Authority official Jibril Rajoub’s entry to Israel before the Meretz party invited him to its conference.

She noted that Rajoub had recently been allowed to speak before the Institute for National Security Studies (INSS).

A-G Weighing Legal Action Against MKs who Leaked Zygier Affair

The Attorney General reported that pre-planned statements are not protected under MKs’ immunity.

Attorney General and Government Legal Advisor Yehuda Weinstein is considering a request by MK Miri Regev (Likud) to open a criminal investigation against MKs Ahmed Tibi (Raam-Taal), Zehava Galon (Meretz) and Dov Chenin (Hadash), who rendered ineffective a gag order on the Zygier affair by speaking about the affair in the Knesset plenum.

Once the MKs spoke about the affair in the plenum, where deliberations are broadcast live on the televised Knesset Channel, other Israeli news outlets felt free to report about it, too. Continue Reading »
