Ayalon: Israel will reject Abbas’ request for PA economic accord review

Abbas requests a review of the 1994 Paris Protocol amid pressure from protesters to cancel PA-Israeli economic agreement.

Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon on Monday said that Israel will reject Palestinian requests to update the 1994 Paris Protocol, the framework that established economic relations between Israel and the PA, Israel Radio reported.

Palestinians have huge debts to Israel, and yet they are operating against it in international organizations, Ayalon said.

“There is no room to fix it when there is no progress in the political channel, and the Palestinians have huge debts to Israel for transferring gas and electricity, for example,” he said.

Syrian troops kill 10 in Palestinian refugee camp

BEIRUT – Syrian government troops stormed into a Palestinian refugee district and raided its hospital on Saturday after a four-day artillery assault on the southern suburb where rebels have been hiding out, opposition activists said.

Historian Benny Morris: Arab Hate the Obstacle to Peace

The Arab goal of destroying Israel in the name of Islam is the obstacle to Israeli-Arab peace, says conflict historian.

 

The main obstacle to Israeli-Arab peace is the Palestinian nationalist movement’s fanaticism and refusal to compromise, historian Benny Morris has said.

Morris, who was once numbered among Israel’s most staunchly left-wing academics, told Haaretz, “The decades of researching the conflict… left me with a feeling of deep despair,” he said. “I’ve written enough about a conflict that has no solution, primarily due to the Palestinians’ consistency in rejecting a two-state solution.”

He mentioned his most recent book, “One State, Two States,” which, he said, describes a “historic journey” with a political purpose. Continue Reading »

Cyprus interested in importing Israeli liquefied natural gas

Following Cypriot delegation’s visit to Israel, a Cyprus’ CI&T Minister says natural gas could flow to Cyprus by 2015 at low price.

Cyprus hopes to begin importing liquefied natural gas from Israel by early 2015, Cypriot Commerce, Industry and Tourism Minister Neoklis Sylikiotis was quoted as saying by Famagusta Gazette Online Tuesday.

Israel is in favor of supplying Cyprus with between 0.5 and 0.7 billion cubic meters of natural gas for electricity production, Sylikiotis reportedly said. The island country is planning to import natural gas in the short term, before exploiting its own offshore reserves around 2018.

WASHINGTON – Professor Yuval Shany, dean at the Hebrew University’s law faculty who was elected to serve on the UN’s Human Rights Committee, was celebrating his achievement on Thursday night.

Speaking of his new role, Shany praised the Foreign Ministry and Israel’s mission to the UN who managed to push the decision after a lengthy diplomatic campaign.
