Penn, whose father is Jewish, was the keynote speaker at a conference entitled “Can Haiti Grow?” which was organized by IsraAid and the Pratt Foundation and spoke about his NGO, J/P Haitian Relief Organization.

“Our mission was to spend a few weeks in Haiti as a 24/7 delivery service for drugs for the hospitals that needed them,” he told the audience, praising the work of IsraAID who teamed up with his NGO to establish a school in the Petionville refugee camp, in the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince.

“The indirect impact of IsraAID is that everything that JP/HRO has accomplished would not have existed without the inspiration and support that they provided,” Penn said.

Penn also met with former Israeli President Shimon Peres at the Shimon Peres Peace Center in Jaffa during his visit to Israel.

Peres congratulated Penn on his outstanding contributions on behalf of humanitarian aid work, telling him that “I saw the Mystic River and Milk, but the real Oscars go to you for what you have done in Haiti.”
