The Cypriot secret service foiled a terrorist attack against Israeli interests at the seaport of the country’s capital city Limassol, Cypriot daily Alithia reported on Thursday.

Cypriot agents discovered 100 grams of explosives they say was meant to target cruise ships carrying Israeli tourists in Cyprus and in other countries.

The IDF had no comment on the report.

Last month, Israel asked security forces around the world, including in Cyprus and Greece, to increase protection for Israeli tourists ahead of the High Holy Days.

A Swedish national of Lebanese descent arrested in Cyprus on suspicion of plotting to attack Israeli tourists in the country will stand trial on September 12, authorities said on Friday.

Reuters reported that the man, who has not been identified, faces nine charges of security-related offenses related to tracking the movements and areas frequented by Israeli visitors to the holiday island. He was arrested on July 7 as a suspected security threat.

NICOSIA – A man suspected of planning attacks on Israeli interests in Cyprus was detained by a court on the island on Monday, as Israel’s leader again accused Hezbollah militants and Iran over the alleged plot.

The 24-year-old suspect, whose name has not been disclosed, was arrested in the Cypriot port city of Limassol on July 7, on suspicion of tracking the movements of Israeli tourists. He is a Swedish national of Lebanese origin.

Terrorist Arrested in Cyprus Who May Have Targeted Israelis

A man detained a week ago on suspicion of planning a terror attack in Cyprus may have targeted Israeli interests.

Cyprus authorities have detained a man on suspicion of being involved in planning a terrorist attack on the east Mediterranean island, a police spokesman said Friday.

The Associated Press quoted spokesman Andreas Angelides as having said that police have “an individual in custody on possible charges pertaining to terrorism laws.”

Angelides declined to identify the suspect, the level of his involvement in the plot and what the intended target would have been. He said disclosure of any details about the case could compromise an ongoing investigation. Continue Reading »

Turkey accuses Israel of violating north Cyprus airspace

Turkish army claims Israeli aircraft entered Turkish-controlled area five times on Monday; fighter jets launched in response

 

Turkey accused Israel on Thursday of violating the airspace of Turkish-controlled northern Cyprus in a controversial oil and gas exploration area.

The Israeli aircraft violated the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus’s airspace five times in Monday’s incident which saw Turkish fighter jets chase out the intruder, the army command said in a statement.

It gave no other details about the incident nor the type of Israeli plane involved in the alleged incursion over the breakaway statelet, which is recognized only by Ankara.
