Tel Aviv pulled out all the stops Saturday night for the Grand Final of the Eurovision Song Contest that began in the city at 10pm. Fans of the show had the city crowded from the late afternoon, with many main roads closed.

The Saturday show was the culmination of a week-long event, including two semifinals on Tuesday and Thursday.

Israel very much went all in for the event, building a Eurovision village on a beachfront Park, where Eurovision fans could soak up the atmosphere, enjoy food stalls and special live events at night. Continue Reading »

Israeli legal team seeks Icelandic entrant to Eurovision banned from Israel

The Israel Law Center, Shurat HaDin, a civil rights NGO asked Israel’s Interior Minister to prevent Iceland’s Hatari band from entering the country over its intention to use the stage as a political platform to criticize Israel’s settlement policy, knowing it would violate the rules of the European music competition.

50 UK artists call on BBC to boycott 2019 Eurovision from Israel

More than 50 British ‘culture figures’ sign protest letter insisting the BBC cancel their planned televised coverage of the yearly singing contest because, in their opinion, the hosting country Israel, ‘violates Palestinian human rights.’

More than 50 British musicians, authors and prominent figures in the film industry have called on the BBC not to broadcast the 2019 Eurovision Song Contest because it will be hosted by Israel.

Fashion designer Vivienne Westwood, singer Peter Gabriel, film director Ken Loach and writer Mike Leigh are among the celebrities who signed a letter calling to ban this year’s contest, which will take place in May in Tel Aviv. Continue Reading »
