Israel top contender to replace Bulgaria’s aging MiG-29s with IDF F-16s

In order to improve compliance with NATO standards, Bulgaria’s Parliament approved a plan to buy IDF F-16 jets in a $2 billion deal.

Israel is in the running to replace Bulgaria’s aging MiG-29s after Sofia gave the green light to replace its Soviet-designed jets.

Bulgaria’s parliament approved the plan to buy the jets in June in order to improve its compliance with NATO standards – which it joined in 2004 – in a 3.5 billion leva (NIS 7.4 billion) military modernization project.

Nice Gesture: Bulgaria decides to open honorary consulate in Jerusalem

Following a Bulgarian cabinet meeting last week, their government decided it would open honorary consulate in Jerusalem, giving “General Honorary Consul”  jurisdiction over entire state, not just southern Israel.

Bulgaria will, “as a first step,” open an honorary consulate in Jerusalem that will not only deal with Bulgarian interests in the capital, but throughout the country, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Sunday.

Netanyahu made this announcement at Sunday’s cabinet meeting, saying he discussed the matter on Saturday night during a phone call with Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borissov, who was in the country earlier this month. Continue Reading »
