Israel & Germany to fund Jerusalem brain research center

Hebrew University of Jerusalem & the Max Planck Society agree to build a new brain research center to serve as top teaching and research facility in the field.

 

 

A brain research center costing 3 million euro during its first five years of existence will be established by the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and the Max Planck Society, an independent non-governmental and nonprofit association of German research institutes publicly funded by Germany’s federal and state governments.

It will be established on the the university’s Givat Ram campus in the capital, where the signing ceremony will be held on January 9.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu agreed to disagree on the question of plans to build more settlements in the West Bank, the chancellor said on Thursday. “We agreed that we disagree on this,” Merkel said at a news conference with Netanyahu in Berlin.

“We in Germany believe the work on a two-state solution must be continued … we must keep trying to come to negotiations and one-sided moves should be avoided,” she added.

Merkel’s message: Promote the peace process or face world seclusion

Merkel, who has had a rocky relationship with Netanyahu over the past four years, is expected to stress that the Israeli leader must choose between promoting the peace process, including establishing a Palestinian state, or facing international seclusion.

BERLIN – German Chancellor Angela Merkel reassured Israel of her country’s support on Saturday, two days after Berlin disappointed the Jewish state by abstaining in a UN vote on the Palestinians’ status.

Germany, which will host Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and many of his ministers next week, abstained in Thursday’s vote in the UN General Assembly which provided de facto recognition of a sovereign Palestinian state.

Israel’s special relationship with Germany won’t hold to next generation

A German Foreign Ministry official says the younger generation’s criticism of Israel’s handling of Palestinian issues is growing in Germany

German criticism of Israel’s foreign policy is growing, particularly in regards to the Palestinian issue, a German Foreign Ministry official told Israeli officials in a closed meeting earlier this week.

Germany’s younger generation feels more at liberty to criticize Israel, he added.

The official said that in 20 years time, “the special relationship” between the two countries will not be as it is today.

He stressed that Germany feels it is very important to maintain its relations with Israel but doubted this would still be relevant in 20 years. Continue Reading »
