An anti-Islam activist has won a preliminary round in her First Amendment fight to place New York City bus advertisements calling enemies of Israel “savages.”

The bus advertisement submitted by blogger Pamela Geller, initially rejected by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority.

Pamela Geller, executive director of the American Freedom Defense Initiative, had submitted an ad from the group that read, “In any war between the civilized man and the savage, support the civilized man.”

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton met with President Shimon Peres in Jerusalem on Monday, saying that the transformations which the Middle East is undergoing require “friends like us to think together and act together.”

Arriving in Israel Sunday night for a 24-hour visit, Clinton said that the region was in the midst of a “time of uncertainty, but opportunity.” She posited that the changes in the Middle East have given the US and Israel the chance to advance their shared goals of security, stability and democracy.

U.S. opposes report recommending legalization of West Bank settlements

Obama administration rejects report claiming Israel isn’t occupying the West Bank: ‘we do not accept the legitimacy of continued Israeli settlement activity.’

 

The U.S. State Department criticized on Monday night the Edmond Levy committee report which recommended legalizing most outposts in the West Bank, based on the assertion that Israel is not an occupying power.

Patrick Ventrell, a U.S. State Department spokesman, spoke to reporters in Washington. “Obviously, we’ve seen the reports that an Israeli Government appointed panel has recommended legalizing dozens of Israeli settlements in the West Bank, but we do not accept the legitimacy of continued Israeli settlement activity and we oppose any effort to legalize settlement outposts,” siad Ventrell. WASHINGTON – The United States has commissioned 361 new Tomahawk cruise missiles, and some 238 of them are meant to find their way to the Fifth Fleet, which is based in Bahrain, Ynet learned on Sunday.

Panetta: Military option against Iran ready and available

US secretary of defense tells ABC news neither Washington nor international community will allow Iran to develop a nuclear weapon, adds preference for diplomacy over military intervention.

 

The military option against Iran is ready and available, US Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta said on Sunday in an interview with ABC News’ This Week.

“The fundamental premise is that neither the United States nor the international community is going to allow Iran to develop a nuclear weapon,” Panetta said. “We will do everything we can to prevent them from developing a weapon.”

No gaps exist between the U.S. and Israel on Iran nuclear program, says official

Senior official involved in Baghdad talks says U.S. is pressuring Iran because it perceives it as a real threat to world security, not because of Israeli pressure.

 

“There are no gaps between the U.S. and Israel in anything related to talks between Iran and the six world powers over the future of Iran’s nuclear program,” a U.S. official told journalists during a briefing in Tel Aviv.

The U.S. official, who is intimately acquainted with the P5 + 1 talks which took place in Baghdad last week, asked to remain anonymous owing to the sensitive nature of the issue.

Israel’s atomic arsenal could fall victim to a new U.S. nuclear policy

Senior Haaretz analyst Amir Oren says that if Obama wins in November, he will likely push for dramatic new reductions in nuclear arsenals; in addition to the U.S. and Russia, Israel may also have to give up some of the nuclear warheads it reportedly holds.

 

On February 17, Defense Minister Ehud Barak visited the Hiroshima memorial for the victims of the first atomic bomb used on people in human history. Barak, who according to the Japanese news agency Kyodo described the bombing of the city as “one of the unavoidable tragedies” of World War II, viewed the exhibits. His escorts drew his attention to a map of the world listing the number of nuclear warheads in the possession of the atomic powers.

Students at George Washington University, in Washington D.C. walked out on a lecture by Israeli Ambassador to the United States, Michael Oren, on Monday night.

As Ambassador Oren’s lecture “Ultimate Allies: Israel and the United States,” started, about 30 students raised signs, got up, and left the auditorium in silence. Oren suggested they stay and conduct a dialog, but none of the protesting students changed their mind and stayed.

Israeli, Greek and U.S. forces are in the midst of a drill in preparation for a possible war over Israel’s huge off-shore gas discoveries, which also may contain commercializable oil. Lebanon and Hizbullah have claimed the fields are in Lebanese territory and that they will “defend” the area against drilling by Israel.

The week-long drill is simulating air-to-air combat and anti-submarine warfare and is taking place off the coast of Turkey, possibly signaling it not to interfere with Israeli energy operations in the Mediterranean Sea. Continue Reading »

Report: U.S. asked Russia to warn Iran of ‘last chance’ to avoid military strike

Clinton reportedly told her Russian counterpart to rely message to Tehran that it must engage in talks with world powers or face a military strike within months, according to Russian daily Kommersant.

The United States has asked Russia to deliver an ultimatum to Iran, warning the Islamic Republic that it has one last chance for talks before a military strike, the Kommersant daily quoted Russian diplomats as saying on Wednesday.
