WATCH: Tel Aviv paints handicapped space around car, then tows it.

Security cameras in Tel Aviv documented a Tel Aviv municipality worker painting handicapped space markings around a vehicle parked legally in the city, resulting in the car being towed shortly afterward, to its owner’s chagrin.

The security camera video was obtained by the vehicle’s angry owner as part of her efforts to fight the fine she was assessed for parking in a handicapped space. The video and story of Tel Aviv resident Hila’s fight against the city went viral in Israel on Tuesday.

Report: 27% of Israelis struggle with Hebrew

Israel’s Central Bureau of Statistics finds that Hebrew is native tongue of only 49% of Israelis, with  26% of Russians, & 12% of Arabs don’t speak any Hebrew at all.

More than six decades after the establishment of the State of Israel and more than a century after the revival of the Hebrew language as a spoken vernacular, data indicate that the language is not as culturally solid in Israel as one might expect. “American Idol” returned for Season 12 this week and the judges kicked-off the season in fine style in New York City, where there was definitely a bit of Hebrew love going on between one contestant and judge Mariah Carey.

History made: 2 Israeli films up for best documentary Oscar

Both, Dror Moreh’s “The Gatekeepers” & “5 Broken Cameras,” directed by Emad Burnat & Guy Davidi are nominated for Academy Awards.

Two Israeli films were nominated for the 85th Academy Awards’ Best Documentary Feature category on Thursday, The Gatekeepers and 5 Broken Cameras.

Dror Moreh’s The Gatekeepers, which features interviews with all six living former chiefs of the Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency).

The film features interviews with Yuval Diskin, Avi Dichter, Ami Ayalon, Ya’acov Peri, Carmi Gillon and Avraham Shalom.

The interviews are interspersed with newsreel and archival footage and computer-enhanced imagery.

Haifa mayor declares war on English…of all things!

 

As mayor, Yona Yahav abolished use of English words in official municipal documents & seeks to obligate businesses to use Hebrew signs instead of, or next to the English ones.

With increasing frequency, Israelis are making use of English words in their day-to-day lives. The English language envelops Israeli consumer culture, from the word for music, “muzika,” to simply saying iPhone with an Israeli accent and including so many other instances.

English is the language of the “app generation” and prevades Israeli children’s education.

IDF Band’s European tour becomes target of protesters after Gaza operation

Instead of the pleasant week of music & shopping the band was likely expecting, they faced a bomb threat, several protest rallies & angry demonstrators calling them “stinking murderers”.

Will Tel Aviv win title of ‘Most Innovative City’?

In a competition testing forward thinking, The Wall Street Journal nominates the city that never sleeps as the Most Innovative City.

Tel Aviv is one of three cities nominated for the title of “Most Innovative City” in a competition run by the Wall Street Journal. The other cities nominated, selected in an online vote, are New York City and Medellin, Colombia.

The competition tests a city’s capacity to adapt and re-imagine itself and the municipality’s ability of forward thinking.

Other cities that competed for the title but did not make the final voting round include Chicago, Vancouver, Seattle, Sao Paolo, Singapore and London.
