Russia’s S-300 surface-to-air missile defense system arrives in Syria

Moscow’s decision to send the S-300 missile defense system came after a Russian plane was mistakenly downed by Syrian air defense, killing 15 Russian serviceman on board, during an Israeli air strike in Latakia.

Russia has delivered its S-300 missile defense system to Syria as promised, Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu told President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday.

“We have completed the delivery of the S-300 system,” Shoigu said according to Russia Today (RT) adding that the system consisted of 49 pieces of military equipment, such as radars, control vehicles and four launchers.

Israel’s Defense Minister Liberman meets with Russian counterpart Sergei Shoigu, to discuss planned S-300 missiles shipments to Syria.

The Russian Foreign Ministry summoned Israel’s Ambassador to Moscow Gary Koren over the weekend to provide clarifications after Poland decided to exclude Russia from a commemoration project for the victims of the Nazi extermination camp in Sobibór.

Russia said on Thursday it was very concerned about reports of an Israeli attack in Syria and that any such action, if confirmed, would amount to unacceptable military interference in the war-ravaged country.

Visiting Russians are seeking cooperation in energy, space

The most important item raised between Putin and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday was an offer by Russia’s state-owned energy company Gazprom to join in developing Israel’s offshore gas reserves. The largest extractor of natural gas in the world and Russia’s biggest company, Gazprom wants to open a local subsidiary that will engage in drilling and offshore and onshore pipeline operations.

Russian President Vladimir Putin is planning to make his first official visit to Israel since 2005, although the exact date for the visit has not yet been determined, the Foreign Ministry said Tuesday.

News of Putin’s expected visit came as Russia was the center of controversy for its continued support of Syrian President Bashar Assad, despite his brutal crackdown on dissenters.
