US court fines Iran $813m for 1983 Lebanon attack

WASHINGTON: A US federal judge has ordered Iran to pay more than $813 million in damages and interest to the families of 241 US soldiers killed in the 1983 bombing of a Marine barracks in Lebanon.

“After this opinion, this court will have issued over $8.8 billion in judgments against Iran as a result of the 1983 Beirut bombing,” Judge Royce Lamberth wrote in a ruling this week, a copy of which was seen Friday by AFP.

“Iran is racking up quite a bill from its sponsorship of terrorism,” the Washington judge added, noting that “a number of other Beirut bombing cases remain pending, and their completion will surely increase this amount.” Continue Reading »

US sends reinforcements to Gulf amid Iran tensions

DUBAI – A US navy ship that had been slated for decommissioning has been sent instead to the Gulf to help mine-clearing operations, the US Fifth Fleet based in Bahrain said, the latest move in a gradual US build-up as tensions with  Iran smoulder.

“We have plans to close the Strait of Hormuz because military commanders must have plans for any situation,” Iran’s armed forces chief of staff, General Hassan Firouzabadi, said late Friday according to ISNA news agency.

“But Iran, acting rationally, will not close the corridor through which 40% of the world’s energy passes, unless its interests are in serious trouble,” he said. Continue Reading »

The United Nations’ Human Rights Council (UNHRC) appointed on Friday three officials to conduct a fact-finding mission on how the Jewish communities in Judea and Samaria (Yehuda and Shomron) affect the lives of Palestinian Authority Arabs.

According to a CBS News report the Council president, Uruguay Ambassador Laura Dupuy Lasserre, named three women to the panel: Christine Chanet of France, Unity Dow of Botswana and Asma Jahangir of Pakistan.

Dupuy Lasserre was quoted in the report as having said their mission will be to look at how Israeli communities impact “the civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights of the Palestinian people.” Continue Reading »

Senior IDF officer: Israel is preparing for the next Lebanon war

Six years after the outbreak of the Second Lebanon War, the IDF is saying openly that Israel is preparing for another Lebanon war.

The commander of the IDF’s 91st Division, Brigardier-General Hertzi Halevy told journalists on Thursday, “We understand that there is more than one factor, whether this is Lebanese, or whether it will come from somewhere else, that can ignite the border here.”
