CNN Reports: US offers Egyptian army intel for its Sinai battles

 

The White House is offering Egypt increased intel sharing, including satellite imagery & drone flights and intercepts of cellphone & other communications among militants in Sinai •  for the first time since the 1973 Yom Kippur War, Egypt is preparing to use aircraft & tanks in Sinai in its offensive against militants there.

Looking to increase security in the Sinai Peninsula, U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta is offering Egypt a package of classified intelligence-sharing capabilities designed to help it identify military threats in the area and reassure Israel that Egypt can deal with rising militancy along Israel’s border, a senior Pentagon official told CNN on Monday.

Pro-Arab NGOs have been taking advantage of the Taglit-Birthright program that brings young Jewish people on tours of Israel – to take the tourists on their own tours and provide them with a pro-Arab perspective on Israel, according to the Makor Rishon newspaper.

Pro-Palestinians dismayed at the ‘Guardian’ hiring of Treviño

A group of pro-Palestinian activists expressed “shock and dismay” Sunday at the addition of journalist and board member of Act for Israel Joshua Treviño to the British daily The Guardian’s US commentary team.

In a letter to the Guardian’s editor, signed by Sarah Colborne, director of the Palestine Solidarity Campaign, along with other heads of pro-Palestinian organizations and individuals ranging from academics to actors, the activists accused Treviño of urging the Israeli army to murder US citizens, citing a message Treviño posted on Twitter in 2011: “Dear IDF: If you end up shooting any Americans on the new Gaza flotilla – well, most Americans are cool with that.

March in Sweden Wearing Kippot on Heads

Hundreds of Jews & non-Jewish supporters wearing kippot marched in Malmo, Sweden  protesting against the recent rise in anti-Semitism.

Hundreds of Orthodox Jews wearing kippot, as well as non-Jewish supporters, marched in the southern Swedish city of Malmo on Friday, protesting against the recent rise in anti-Semitism and calling for religious tolerance for all minorities.

A number of anti-Semitic incidents have been reported by the Jewish community of Malmo, Sweden’s third largest city, in recent years, including verbal abuse directed against an Orthodox rabbi.

Jewish filmmaker Laurence Gavron, the first Senegalese-naturalized white person to be elected for parliament, will soon release a documentary on the Jewish history of African tribes.

Filmmaker Laurence Gavron is on a journey to document lost Jewish tribes in Africa. The French-born Gavron, who has made Senegal her home since 1989, says she was immediately taken by the project, which she says combines her passion for Africa with the mystery of rediscovering Judaism.

Knesset Bill calls for Jewish prayer times on Temple Mount

Suggested prayer times would be separate, held for Muslims and Jews with overlap for Christians at Jerusalem’s most holy site.

On the heels of a US State Department report criticizing Israel for not allowing non-Muslim prayer on the Temple Mount, MK Arye Eldad (National Union) has drafted a bill mandating separate hours for Jews and Muslims to pray at the holy site.

According to People Magazine, guests included fellow child actor Macaulay Culkin and real estate mogul Donald Trump’s daughter Ivanka, who converted to Judaism before marrying her husband Jared Kushner.

Norwegian children’s watchdog: Replace circumcision with symbolic ritual

Children’s watchdog, Dr. Anne Lindboe,  says Circumcising boys violates their right to decide over their own body.

Norway’s ombudsman for children’s rights has proposed that Jews and Muslims replace male circumcision with a symbolic, nonsurgical ritual.

Dr. Anne Lindboe told the newspaper Vart Land last month that circumcising boys was a violation of their right to decide over their own body.

“Muslim and Jewish children are entitled to the same protection as all other children,” Lindboe said, adding that the practice caused unnecessary pain and was medically unbeneficial. Continue Reading »

The number of Israelis leaving home for the Diaspora declined to a 40-year low, and many “yordim” – emigrants – are returning.

The Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) released data for 2010, the latest period available, and said that the number of Israelis who left the country to live elsewhere was 15,600, 300 fewer than in 2009. Most of the emigrants are from Europe, and only 23 percent are American.

After taking into account new immigrants, the figure for net emigration was only 5,400, which is slightly more than in 2009. Continue Reading »

Bloomberg Report: ‘Israel has enough gas to last 150 years’

Bloomberg news agency reports Mediterranean explorations have uncovered $240 billion worth of gas, far more than Israel can ever use.

Gas exploration companies Noble Energy Inc., Delek Group Ltd. and others have discovered enough natural gas to supply Israel’s domestic needs for the next 150 years, an investigative report published by Bloomberg news agency claimed on Saturday.

“The gas would be worth about $240 billion, equal to Israel’s annual economic output, based on today’s prices in the UK,” the report claimed.

According to the Central Bureau of Statistics, figures show that 47,855 Israeli couples marry via Orthodox Rabbinical Courts.

 

 

Close to 20,000 Israelis tie the knot overseas every year, mainly to avoid the tortuous process of a religious marriage at home.

Tali Haberfeld-Adar, 42, married David, 48, two months ago at a speedy ceremony in Cyprus. For both, it was a second marriage. Having already suffered the rabbinate, they chose another way.
